Joseph Scott McRae

Joseph Scott McRae of Virginia Beach passed away on July 11, 2023 at the age of 49 after battling a rapidly moving rare disease called HLH. He was surrounded by loved ones.
Scott was born on June 22, 1974 to parents James A. "Jim" McRae and Marsha Parker McRae. Scott grew up in Western Branch and graduated from Ferrum College. He worked in sales for Commonwealth Building Materials for many years and had numerous clients who he was proud to call great friends.
Scott loved his family dearly. Scott, Tina, Jake and Sydney had great adventures traveling together. He loved to golf, watch just about any sports events, and play games with his family. He had an infectious sense of humor and was extremely generous. Everyone he met considered him a friend. He loved his family at Commonwealth and his golf buddies.
Scott is survived by his loving wife Tina, his two children Jake and Sydney Bingham and his dog Morgan Freeman (who he called his very best friend). In addition to his birth family, Scott received a very large, loving extended family on his wife's side whom he greatly appreciated. Scott was predeceased by his mother and father and his brother James Todd McRae. Additional survivors include his mother and father in-law Jerry and Chris Payne, sister and brother in-law Mandi and James Brock and their children Quinn, Lane, Johnny, and Vann, sister in-law Melanie Richmond and her husband Mike, nephews Ross and Patrick McRae and Dylan Richmond, stepmother Gretta Claunch and her husband Joe, aunt Elizabeth "Bets" Dudley, cousins Armistead "Ted" Dudley and Paul McRae, Jr., in addition to numerous other family members who he loved dearly.
Scott will be honored at a memorial service at Haygood United Methodist Church on Haygood Road in Virginia Beach on Friday July 21 at 11 AM. There will be a celebration of life gathering that evening from 6:30 until 9:00 at Bay Local at 2917 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.
The family would like to thank the staff of Virginia Beach General Hospital, Leigh Memorial Hospital and especially The National Institute of Health in Bethesda for their care and compassion during his illness. Scott was touched by the care he received from the nurses and doctors he met, and the family will never forget that kindness.
