Joseph Frederick Melcher, 83, of Tecumseh, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025 following an extensive battle with leukemia. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to Paul and Johanna Melcher. Joe attended De La Salle High School in Detroit and graduated from The University of Detroit which would launch his 35 year career with the Ford Motor Company. He served in the US Air Force and reserve training. Always a car guy, he could always be spotted driving an immaculate Ford, from his first Edsel to his prized Mustang, and later to his comfortable shiny Edge.
Joe had two children with former wife Carol Melcher; Kate Melcher and Scott (Carrie) Melcher. He is survived by his children and stepsons Kevin (Holly) Poppink, Andy (Laura) Poppink, his grandchildren; Sevryn, Lorelai, Tess, Mia, Cal, and Nora; two great grandchildren; his sister Agnes (Hans) Spata; brothers Bill Melcher, Paul (Sue) Melcher; countless nieces and nephews; and his loving wife of 31 years, Martha Poppink Melcher. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Werner.
Joe was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh, Ml. He sang in the church choir, ushered, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus raising funds for youth programs. He coached peewee soccer and basketball. Joe and Martha were mentors in the Lenawee Big Brother Big Sister program for many years. After retirement, Joe volunteered at Herrick and Hickman Hospitals to escort patients and visitors via golf cart to their treatments between the parking lot and the hospital. Truly, Joe loved deeply, and showed his love through acts of service.
Joe enjoyed golfing around the country and with his pals at Tecumseh Golf Club, watching sports (especially Michigan and Detroit teams) spending time on the water, traveling with his wife and friends. "Captain Joe" organized a weekly Dinner Club with friends. Joe loved to dance. "Proud Mary" was his favorite song, and he loved to show off his Detroit moves.
Joe never met a stranger, and once you became a friend, you became family. Tecumseh is a better place because of his kindness, and generosity of heart. He made the world a better place.
Joe's family will receive guests at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh on April 26, 2025 at 10:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00pm. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe's life at a luncheon in the church hall.

On behalf of the Capuchin friars, I offer condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Melcher upon his death. May Joseph rest in peace, and God's mercy comfort all those who grieve their loss. Joseph was a long time supporter of Capuchin ministries. The friars are truly grateful for memorial donations.
