Joseph Aaron "Joe" Metzler, 75, of Mount Vernon, OH passed away after a lengthy illness and was received into his Lord and Savior's care on April 13, 2024. He was born on November 2, 1948, in Holtwood, PA, to Christian Leaman and Anna (Walters) Metzler. He grew up on a farm in what is now Muddy Run Park. He was the husband of Rhoda June (Long) Metzler. They were married on December 24, 1975. His first wife, Irene Marie (Esch) Metzler passed away on March 3, 1975. They were married on May 1, 1971.
Joe attended Penn Manor High School and later completed his course of study with the Church of the Nazarene. He worked for Queen Dairy in Lancaster, farmed for his brother-in-law Clyde Miller in Quarryville, and sold auto parts for Jerome H. Rhoads. Later, Joe and Rhoda worked together here as he managed Rhoads Service Center and she managed Rhoads Mart in Intercourse, PA. Joe later worked for Ephrata Auto Parts.
Joe chose Jesus as his Savior and Lord at a young age and he lived his life in service to God. Joe and Rhoda volunteered on several Work and Witness teams and did prison ministry through the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Joe served as pastor at both Romney and Grafton Blueville Church of the Nazarene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He loved working on automobiles for family and friends, and also enjoyed hunting for archery, rifle, and muzzleloader seasons.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by three children: Stuart, married to Laura (Hess) of Lancaster, PA, Joni Bertram of Elkhart, IN and Jed, married to Jennifer (Haines) of Rio, WV; eight grandchildren: Jamison and Hope Bertram and Isabelle, Benjamin, Toby, Nicholas, Malachi and Christopher Metzler; and four siblings: Barbara Miller, Samuel Metzler (Janie), Lillian Yoder (John), and Arlene Carpenter (James). He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Clyde Miller, brother, Christian Lehman Metzler, and sister, Susan Metzler.
Thanks to Whispering Hills Care Center for providing long-term care for the past two and a half years.
A viewing will take place at New Danville Mennonite Church, 103 Marticville Rd., Lancaster, PA on Friday, April 19, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with the service by Pastor Jed Metzler to follow at 12:00 noon.
