Joseph Fernando Mirque, 97, of
West Nyack, New York, passed away on February 16, 2024. He was born on December 7, 1926, in New York City.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Mary Mirque, his sons and their spouses - J. Randall Mirque, Andrew Mirque and Gerard DeFranc, Charles Mirque, Brendan and Kelly Mirque, Gregory and Carolyn Mirque, his sister Christina Smyth, grandchildren Jason, Drew, Dana, Matthew, Reagan, Nicholas, Francesca, Christopher, Ryan, Kathleen, Tomas, Yvette, four nieces, four nephews, and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father Jose, mother Aura, and brother Robert.
Education at Manhattan Preparatory High School and Manhattan College laid the foundation for a lifetime of intellectual pursuit and professional achievements that included a successful career in sales; creation and ownership of a successful company that also involved several of his sons. Proud of his Colombian heritage, he sought to instill that same sense of pride in each of his children and grandchildren. A voracious reader of the day's news and his passion for politics provided a vast wealth of learning, networking, and social opportunities. A lover of history, classic films, and big band music, it was commonplace to find him wholeheartedly enjoying one of the three if not all together. He loved to dance whenever the opportunity presented itself; he was a skilled classical piano player, a talent he learned and developed at the Julliard School. He enjoyed engaging with other individuals to learn more about them. Regaling those who would listen with stories of his youth, lessons learned, and wisdom obtained from nine decades, he was the consummate patriarch of his family. Retirement saw him starting a small custom coffee business, selling his own roasted craft coffees. He never stopped learning and never stopped identifying opportunities for himself and his family. He remained passionately curious throughout his long life.
He leaves behind a legacy of family first, pushing oneself to their potential and striving for success, and the most important part of it all: cherishing the time we not only have left but the time we have now with each other. He will be dearly missed.
