Joseph Morgan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parsell Funeral Homes-Atkins-Lodge Chapel - Lewes on Jan. 3, 2026.
Dr. Joseph "Joe" Edward Morgan passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 92, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Joseph Edward Morgan, Sr. and Marion Morgan. From the age of eight, he was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Bill and Anna Morgan in Rehoboth Beach. He graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1951 and later married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Johnson, who would be his loving and devoted wife for over 70 years.

Following high school, Joe attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1956, where he was a member of the ROTC and the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Temple University Dental School in 1960. After dental school, he proudly served in the United States Army Dental Corps from 1960 to 1962, attaining the rank of Captain and and later continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserves.

After completing his military service, Dr. Morgan returned to Lewes, Delaware, where he opened his dental practice on October 8, 1962. He cared for generations of families with dedication and compassion, forming lasting relationships with his patients and colleagues. He was actively involved in the dental profession and served on the Board of the Kent and Sussex Dental Society.

Over the years, he was very active with the Lewes Rotary Club, where he served as President. He also served as Treasurer and Secretary of the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, was President of the Rehoboth Beach Country Club Homeowners Association, and was a 32-degree Mason and a member of St. Johns Lodge #115 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Joe thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf and traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad to participate in golf Pro-Ams. He could almost always be found on the course, often causing a bit of friendly havoc with the horn and sharing laughter and stories with those around him. Golf was not just a pastime but a passion, one that reflected his love for camaraderie, competition, and time spent outdoors. He was also a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan and had a long-standing love of harness racing. At one time, he owned harness horses and followed the sport with great enthusiasm, remaining a loyal and knowledgeable fan throughout his life.

Joe loved life to the fullest and had a contagious laugh that would fill a room when he walked in. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Kathryn M. Lightcap, Sandra J. Oakley, and Nancy M. Ashby; his grandchildren, Zachary J. Oakley, Dr. Jeremy J. Oakley, Dr. Johanna E. Lightcap, Morgan P. Lightcap, James C. Ashby III, Dr. Jack T. Ashby, Benjamin Joseph R. Ashby, and Lily C. Ashby; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Donald W. Morgan (Shirley), his sister, Delores Beede, and several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Morgan's physicians, caregivers, and the staff of Delaware Hospice for their professional and compassionate care over the past several years.
