Joe L. Obaugh of Wirtz, VA, passed away on July 20, 2022. Joe was born on August 18, 1932, in Mount Solon, VA to the late Claude and Ida Lillian Obaugh.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ida Lillian Obaugh, brother Louis Obaugh, and two sisters, Jean Ennis, and Hope Gore. Joe is survived by his wife, of over 67 years Lorraine M. Obaugh; his children, Shawn (Brent) Stine, Suzette (Wade) McIntyre, Ricky (Michelle) Obaugh; grandchildren, Ryan (Melissa) Rudden, Kelly Rudden, Troy Polen, and Seth Polen; and great grandson Liam Rudden and two sisters, Barbara Haynos and Faye Heflin.
Joe was a hard worker and served in the United States Army, stationed overseas. After his military stint, Joe was employed by F.W. Harris as an HVAC/Plumbing Engineer, for more than 40 years. Upon his retirement from F.W. Harris, he and his wife Lorraine relocated to Smith Mountain Lake, VA, where they lived for more than 20 years. One of Joe's favorite things about living on the lake was sitting at the kitchen table each morning eating breakfast, while looking out at the lake, right out his back door.
Joe was a very humble man and took great pride in his family, to which he was a loving provider to his children and grandchildren. Both his children and grandchildren have many fond memories, a few of which include, spending time at the lake, enjoying boat and jet ski rides, waterskiing, and tubing, and enjoying his amazing homemade pancakes. Most importantly, was the fact that he led by example, teaching his family to live with integrity and honesty and that family always comes first. He will be missed dearly, but in our hearts forever.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 2130 Bluewater Drive, Moneta, VA 24121.
