Joseph Bohen Patterson

Joseph Bohen Patterson, President of The Patterson Capital Corporation, died on October 4, 2025, at age 83. He was revered for his unwavering integrity, sharp wit, and profound commitment to family and friends.

Born July 3, 1942, to Gerard and Myra Patterson, Joe was raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey. His early years included delivering newspapers and assisting in the family drapery business. He kept close ties to Ridgewood, returning often to see friends and loved ones.

Joe attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Bergen Catholic High School, and Villanova University, earning a B.S. in Economics in 1964. After graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1964 to 1967 as a First Lieutenant, including service in Vietnam with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines.

After his service, Joe earned an MBA from New York University in 1969 and began his Wall Street career at Dean Witter and E.F. Hutton before becoming Vice President at The First Boston Corporation. In 1977 he founded The Patterson Capital Corporation, which he led for nearly five decades.

A passionate golfer, Joe won the New Jersey High School and Caddie Championships in 1960, played varsity at Villanova, and later won consecutive Hackensack Club titles. His memberships at The Ridgewood Country Club, The Vintage Club, and La Jolla Country Club, among others, reflected his enduring love for the game and its social bonds.

Joe wed Helen Patricia Patterson in 2003, sharing 22 joyful years. He was an accomplished jet pilot, skilled photographer, and world traveler. His accolades included an honorary D.C.S. from Villanova in 1993 and service on the boards of The USO and the Big Horn Institute.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; cousins Michael Jones and Marie Griggs; and many dear friends. A Memorial Mass was held at Mary Star of the Sea, with interment and Military Honors at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
