Joseph Peter Plachta

Joseph Peter Plachta, age 94, of Fairmont, West Virginia, formerly of Farmington, West Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Fairmont Regional Medical Center. He was born in Idamay, West Virginia on June 28, 1930, to the late Walter and Mary Sak Plachta.
Joseph was a Veteran, having proudly served in the United States Navy aboard a goodwill ship, the U.S.S. Worcester, where he was a Chief Petty Officer. He served during the Korean Conflict and ended his time in the Navy with honors after visiting more than 68 countries.
He attended the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois and was an electrician by trade. Throughout his career he worked for Eastern Associates, Peabody, and Patriot Coal, where he was a member of the United Mine Workers Association.
Joseph had many hobbies throughout his life, which included gardening, canning, the stock market, and repairing anything that he could. He loved his dogs and was very compassionate with all animals. He also loved spending time with his family and taking care of everyone. Family was very important to him, and he never forgot his Polish heritage.
Joseph is survived by his two daughters: Cindy Plachta Gillespie and her husband Terry, of Chester, Virginia, and Josie Plachta of Fairmont, West Virginia; Grandchildren: Marcus Gillespie and his fiancé, Emily Reedy of Berryville, Virginia, Jaqueline Gillespie Armitage and her husband Tyler of Chester, Virginia; Sister-in-law Carolyn Frobe of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Plachta, and siblings: Stanley Plachta, John Plachta, Mary Artman, and Agnes Davis.
The family would like to thank W.V.U. Medicine- Fairmont Skilled Nursing (second floor), Harmony Assisted living at White Oaks in Bridgeport, and the W.V.U. Ruby Memorial medical staff for their compassionate care of Joseph.
Family and friends are welcome to call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington, West Virginia on Monday, July 22, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor J.J. Davis officiating. Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Farmington, West Virginia followed by a dinner at the Zion Assembly Church of God in Idamay.
