Joseph S. Podpora Jr.
Born: February 3, 1935 in Chicago, IL
Died: December 10, 2023 in McHenry, IL
Joseph S. Podpora Jr., known affectionately to all as Joe, made his grand exit from the stage of life on December 10, 2023, at the age of 88. Born on a cold February day in 1935 in Chicago, IL. He married his love Mary Pohlman in Las Vegas on December 15, 1985.
Joe was the kind of man who could sell ice to Eskimos, which was a handy skill during his more than three decades in the insurance business. He didn't just sell policies; he sold peace of mind with a side of humor. He built outboard motors-a testament to his knack for piecing things together, whether it was an engine or a punchline.
He was a renaissance man of hobbies; Joe could be found with a fishing rod in hand, waiting for the next big catch, or on the golf course, where his swings were as unpredictable as his jokes. Bowling alleys echoed with his laughter, and sports fields were graced by his presence as a coach, where he taught kids that the best game plan was to always have fun.
Joe's family was his pride and joy, his ultimate passion project. He leaves behind a legacy of love with his wife Mary, who shared in both his laughter and his heart. His children, Lynne Iverson, Michael and wife Jennifer Podpora, Michael Perona, and Tomi Gawenda and Ed, will carry on his spirit of mischief and merriment. His grandchildren, Arden, Emma, Brooke, Brock, Karen, Haley, Griffin, Tyler, Lynn, Emily and Becky. His brother, Daniel Podpora, and his ex-wife, Elizabeth Peterson, also survive him, each holding unique memories of a man who was larger than life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Podpora, his children, David Perona and Kathryn Stebbins and his son-in-law Bart Iverson.
Joe was the guy who could lighten up any room with his humor. He was funny without even trying, loving without conditions, and handy with more than just a punchline. He had a knack for making every family gathering feel like an episode of a hit sitcom, where he was the beloved star everyone tuned in to see.
Animals instinctively knew Joe was a friend. His pets knew him as the guy who could always be counted on for an extra treat, a belly rub, or a warm spot on the couch.
Words that best describe Joe are as vivid and lively as he was: funny, loving, and handy. He could fix a leaky faucet with the same ease he could elicit a belly laugh. His love was a constant, reliable as the punchlines that would come after his famous, "Hey, did you hear the one about...?"
Joe Podpora Jr. lived a life that was full, spirited, and generously shared with everyone he met. He was a man who knew that the value of a moment was in the joy it brought, the memories it created, and the laughter it inspired. As he takes his final bow, we imagine him cracking a joke, winking at the absurdity of it all, and reminding us to play the music, light the lights, and keep the laughter going long after he's gone.
So here's to Joe-a man who never needed a spotlight because his charisma shone brightly enough. As we say our goodbyes, let's honor his legacy by living as he did: with a joke on our lips, love in our hearts, and always ready for one more round of golf, even if it's just to drive the cart. Thanks for the memories, Joe. The world is a little less bright without you, but heaven is surely in for some good laughs.
