Joseph Pye Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parks Funeral Home - Summerville on Mar. 9, 2026.
Joseph R. Pye, 78, passed away peacefully at his home on the river in Megget, SC on March 6, 2026 with his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Patsy Pye, by his side. Born December 11, 1947, in North Charleston, SC, he was the son of the late John Pye and Margaret Pye.

He is also survived by his son, Patrick Pye (Tammy); his brother, Rodney Pye (Janice); his sisters, Debra Taylor (Pete) and Lisa Quick (Clyde); his nieces, Janet Dangerfield (James) and Rhonda Keenan (Jeff); his nephew, James Taylor (Nicole), five great nieces; and two great nephews.

Mr. Pye was a graduate of North Charleston High School, continued his education at the University of South Carolina, and completed his degree at Baptist College in Charleston, SC. He obtained his master's degree and further higher education at The Citadel.

Following college, Joe honorably served his country as a member of the United States National Guard.

Attending college was both a privilege for Joe and a great sacrifice for his parents. Determined to make them proud, he set out to build a successful career in business finance. But God had other plans for this young man with a servant's heart. Before long, he discovered that his true calling was teaching children.

At the time of his retirement on June 30, 2022, Joe Pye had devoted an extraordinary 52 years to public education, including 49 years as a member of the Dorchester School District Two family, and 23 years serving as Superintendent.

He began his career as a teacher at Alice Birney Elementary School from 1970 to 1973. In 1973, he joined Dorchester School District Two as a science teacher at Rollings Elementary School, where he served until 1976. His leadership journey continued as Assistant Principal at Newington Elementary (1976–1979), Principal of Flowertown Elementary (1979–1991), Assistant Director of Personnel (1991–1994), Director of Personnel (1994–1999), and Deputy Superintendent in 1999 before being named Superintendent later that year. He served as Superintendent until his retirement in 2022.

While serving as Principal of Flowertown Elementary School, the school became the first in Dorchester School District Two to earn statewide recognition as a Palmetto's Finest School. This achievement reflected his lifelong commitment to excellence and his desire to always give his very best to his students and staff. As Superintendent, Mr. Pye continued that commitment by encouraging and mentoring DDTwo schools to pursue both the Palmetto's Finest and the National Blue Ribbon School designations, resulting in numerous finalists and award-winning schools.

During his tenure as Superintendent, Mr. Pye served more than 26,000 students and their families, guiding the district through the challenges of rapid growth while preserving the strong academic tradition that kept Dorchester School District Two among the highest-performing districts in South Carolina. The district completed 28 major building projects, including 11 new schools, 12 school expansions, and numerous facility renovations to serve the district's growing community.

Mr. Pye received numerous honors recognizing his leadership and advocacy for public education. In 2012, he was named South Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators. In 2013, he was inducted into The Citadel School of Education Wall of Fame as a Champion of Education. Charleston Southern University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Education in 2001.

An avid supporter of parent involvement, Mr. Pye served as the second Vice President of the South Carolina PTA Board of Directors and was named the SC PTA Principal of the Year. The Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees recognized Mr. Pye's service to the school system and to the community by naming Joseph R. Pye Elementary School in his honor in 2011.

Mr. Pye also served the broader community through numerous leadership roles. He was President of the Oakbrook Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Foundation Award for Leadership, and served on the Board of Engaging Creative Minds, The Citadel Zucker Family School of Education Development Advisory Board, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Executive Leadership Council. Mr. Pye has also served as Chairman of the United Way Educator Committee and as a member of both the Board of Directors of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors for Heritage Trust Savings and Loan.

His love for children and teaching extended beyond the classroom. For forty years, Mr. Pye faithfully taught Sunday School at Summerville Baptist Church, continuing to mentor and inspire young people in faith and service.

At his district retirement celebration on May 26, 2022, Mr. Pye was honored with multiple awards, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to education:

The Dorchester School District Two Educational Foundation established the Joseph R. Pye Legacy Scholarship, honoring his lifelong dedication to education. The scholarship supports graduates of Dorchester School District Two who plan to pursue careers in education, ensuring that Mr. Pye's passion for teaching will continue to shape future generations.

Spirit Award: Presented by the Dorchester District Two Board of Trustees, acknowledging Mr. Pye's energy, dedication, and positive influence within the district and community.

He will forever be remembered for his passion to help people, his love for teaching, and his zest for life as he traveled the world and enjoyed Gamecock football with family and friends. Mr. Pye embraced life fully and shared that joy generously with those around him.

While our hearts are heavy with the loss of such a remarkable leader, teacher, mentor, and friend, Joe's spirit will continue to live on through his family, the schools and communities he served so faithfully, and the countless lives he inspired. His presence will be felt in the hallways and classrooms of our schools and district office, throughout the greater Summerville and Dorchester County communities he was honored to serve, and in the stories shared by those who knew and loved him. His passion for teaching will also endure through the Joseph R. Pye Legacy Scholarship, ensuring future generations of educators carry forward the same dedication and purpose that defined his life.

The Pye family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the community, school members, friends, neighbors, and family for the overwhelming support and kindness shown during this time. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Summerville Baptist Church or the Joseph R. Pye Legacy Scholarship in his memory. Scholarship contributions may be made online.
