After graduating high school, he completed a two-year electronic technology program at Williamsport Area Community College in Williamsport. He was then employed by General Dynamics in Rochester, N.Y. until he was drafted into the US Army in 1970. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and subsequently was employed by the US Army, as a civilian, until he retired from the Department of Defense in 2006. During his retirement years he worked part-time for the NAPA store in Dallastown.

Joe and Marilyn R. Savel (Roberts) were married in 1969 in Syracuse, N.Y. and had 56 years together.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dallastown. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their family cabin in Clinton County. Up until the end, he lived by his motto, "When alive, live".
