Joseph Scavone
Joseph Scavone, of Shelton, age 96, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026.
He was the husband of Dorothy (Tribunella) Scavone, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage; and father to his daughter, Catherine. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Rose Scavone; his sister, Josephine Santelli; and his brother, John Scavone. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, along with a much-loved circle of chosen family and friends.
Joe joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He was stationed at medical facilities in New York and San Diego, where he was a corpsman and earned the position of operating room technician, assisting with a variety of procedures and surgeries.
He retired from SHW in Ansonia (formerly Farrell Corporation) after 35 years of service, having held positions in drafting, sales, purchasing, and inventory, and was respected for mentoring colleagues. He also worked part-time for nearly 50 years at Riverview Funeral Home in Shelton, where he was the longest tenured employee, assisting families and staff. His reliability, compassion, and quiet presence remain deeply appreciated by all who knew him there.
An avid bowler, Joe was a proud member of weekly bowling leagues for over 70 years. He often served as a team captain and earned numerous trophies and acknowledgements throughout the years, reflecting both his skill and leadership. Bowling was more than a hobby-it was a lifelong passion and a source of camaraderie and joy.
As a dedicated gardener who took great pride in his annual vegetable garden, his yearly garden produced an abundance, which he generously shared with family, friends, and neighbors. Joe was rarely idle and was always working on one or more home projects, each beginning with a detailed, well-thought-out plan and ending in a successful result.
Joe enjoyed activities at the Shelton Senior Center, where he attended a variety of events and trips. His warmth, generosity, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Always curious and eager to learn, he had an inquisitive mind and enjoyed researching a wide range of topics on the internet. This curiosity made it easy for him to connect with others, and people fondly remember how much they enjoyed spending time with him.
A very special thank you to the nurses and aids from Hartford Healthcare Hospice for their dedicated care, compassion and comfort to both Joe and his family.
All are invited to pay their respects and greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Saturday morning from 8:30 AM to 10 AM. His procession will leave the parlor for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Mary Church in Shelton at 10:45 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery in Derby.
