Joseph Vincent Sheehan Jr., 76, of Braintree, Massachusetts, passed away on October 23, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Born in August of 1947, he grew up in Weymouth, MA attending Sacred Heart parish schools. As a child he loved radio, riding his bicycle, and playing basketball. He was president of his Catholic Youth Organization and stayed very involved and dedicated to the Catholic Church throughout his life. Upon graduation from Sacred Heart High School, he joined Local 103 IBEW as an Apprentice Electrician. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam with the SeaBee's as an Electrician. His time in Vietnam instilled in him an appreciation for the language, food, and customs of the Vietnamese people. Upon his return, he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Franklin Institute of Boston, graduating top of his class. Joe became a Master Electrician, and owned his own company before becoming VP of Estimating for Joy Electric. In 1993, he joined the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as an Electrical Safety Specialist, where he authored and edited the National Electric Code (NEC) Handbook. He went on to earn his P.E.License. Work travels took him all across the country, teaching the NEC to local inspectors and other engineers, forming lifelong bonds. He even traveled to Japan, Germany, the Caribbean and Australia as part of his work. In 2010, he finished his career as Curriculum Specialist for Electrical Training Alliance, writing instructional and testing material for electrical apprentices. After retiring in 2016, he volunteered at the IBEW Local 103 union hall writing curriculum and mentoring teachers. Joe had many hobbies and interests throughout his life, including gardening, cooking, computers, Bible studies, and spending time with family. He learned to cook as a child and created his own book of recipes over the years, inspired by his garden and his many travels. Joe loved to laugh, and was known for playing cassette tapes of his favorite comedians and repeating the many jokes and Irish limericks passed down through his family. He loved to travel, whether it was a day trip to Cape Cod, or longer trips with his family and children which took him everywhere from Nova Scotia to Alaska, Peru, St. Louis, Washington DC, Las Vegas and the Caribbean.
Joe was a ham radio enthusiast and a computer hobbyist. He was a member of the Boston Computer Society for many years. He celebrated his 57 year pin with IBEW, and was a member of IEEE, IAEI, and the American Legion of Braintree. He could be found most mornings at Ashley's Diner in Braintree. No matter where he went, he was known for his quick wit, big laugh, and enormous generosity of spirit. Most of all, Joe loved his family, his country, and his church. Joe is survived by his loving wife Christine (Graham) Sheehan; his four children Joseph (Maggie), Elizabeth (Fernando) Sheehan-Castro, Mark, and Matthew (Sainan); his four grandchildren, Milena, Kayani, Jolay and Vincent; beloved brother to Maryellen (Robert) McDermott and Margaret (Bob) O'Keefe. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Vincent Sheehan, Sr, and Margaret (Young).
Services will be held at McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Weymouth, Sunday, November 5th, 2023 from 3 PM to 7 PM. Christine and the entire Sheehan Family

I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. The electrical industry has also lost one of its best teachers, authors, and mentors. He was also one of the kindest and most helpful people that I have ever met, along with being one of the funniest. I first got to know Joe when he worked for Joy Electric where he worked on the NFPA account. Later, I got to work with him when he came to NFPA. He was not only a coworker, but also a friend. I also got to see Joe as an instructor at an IBEW Significant Code Changes class where he kept the class entertained, while he also provided valuable information.

I could not be at the wake or funeral, but thought of you all on those days. I was in the area a few days beforehand, but could not stay, so I got together with some of his former coworkers from NFPA to do something that reminded us of Joe, we went to Ashley´s for breakfast. In addition to my wife, Kathy, I was joined by Amy Cronin, Sue Blake, and Lynne Grant. I told Diane, the waitress that we were there to remember a friend. She said, "Joe?" We all exchanged stories about Joe.

Susan Blake noted:
My heart is full from sharing memories and spending time with good friends.

Liz Byrne now lives in Nicaragua but commented:
I wish I could have been there with you to honor my friend Joe! Loved that guy.

Joe helped me in my career. But I was not alone! Chuck Mello, the past international president of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors commented:

Thanks, I was not aware of Joe's passing.

Joe was a great friend and I owe him a lot in teaching me about code and the code-making process. I remember many good deep code discussions with him on many topics.

Joe meant a lot to a lot of people because he made a difference! The following comments were offered following news of his passing:

Joe was an incredible friend, a master at telling jokes and joining with his incredible laugh, a genius in the NEC and teaching across the world!!! There will never be another person like him!! I enjoyed his family more than life itself!! He took each of his children on a separate vacation with him to ensure they had his undivided attention and made such an incredible lasting impression on each of them!! Joe was my friend from the time he came in the door at NFPA until he passed away!! He lived life to the fullest!! Go to God with all the grace you have provided all of us here on earth, my friend!!

Joe was a private man with a great sense of Irish humor who knew how to celebrate the important things in life. A hard worker and man of faith, he loved his wife & family unconditionally. His circle of friends was large and he will be remembered for a life well-lived.

I first met Joe when he joined Joy Electric, and I knew he would fit in right away. Joe had a great sense of humor and by far one of the smartest persons I knew and in a good way, he never put himself above anyone. Joe was an electrician, estimator, teacher, engineer, mentor, writer of the code, humorist and a really good guy. Over the years we would talk about our families, and he was very proud of his.

A lot of electricians would ask Joe about a code issue and with his teacher's exuberance he would explain why the article was written and how to apply it and you would understand it completely. Joe took our estimating department out of the dark ages and with his magic made our estimating system into data codes and computerized it. For most of us an unthinkable task, but for Joe just another job to do. Joe was a big part of our success.

With Joe's jokes and humor, he would keep us laughing every day and he was quick to give you a compliment as he often told me "I was like a farmer outstanding in his field".

Joe it was great knowing you and I know you will be one of the brightest stars in the night sky.

My condolences to the Sheehan family. I met Joe at the electrical training Alliance in 2012 and used to pick him up at the airport when he visited the office. One of my best memories of him is the stories we used to share about our lives. And, to this day, I continue to pass along one special anecdote he told me during one of our travels. Thank you Joe. Sincerely, Horace.
