Joseph "Homer" Styons, Sr., age 90, of Elizabeth City, NC, peacefully passed away on April 28, 2024 at his home. He was born on April 17, 1934, in Plymouth, NC to the late Joseph Christopher Styons and Bessie Adelaide Hardison Styons.
Homer was a 1952 graduate of Plymouth High School; and a 1956 graduate of Roanoke Bible College. Homer was a minister of God who served at Colonial Heights Church of Christ, in Norfolk, VA; Mount Pleasant Christian Church, Greenville, NC; St. Clairs Church of Christ Bath, NC; Gretna Church of Christ Gretna, VA; and Elizabeth City Church of Christ in Elizabeth City, NC. He helped establish the Eastern North Carolina Christian Men's Fellowship (now Church Planters of ENC) for starting New Testament churches and ministered at Stoneybrook Church of Christ, Wilson, NC. He began a new church, Son Rise Church of Christ in Kill Devil Hills, NC and retired from there. Later he also preached at Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ in Ryland, NC. His last sermon was preached on October 22, 2023 at Journey Christian Church at the age of 89. Homer was also active in the Lions Club of Elizabeth City, NC and served as the District Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer of 31-J for the Lions Club from 1987-1988. He also taught Personal Evangelism classes at Roanoke Bible College and coached the Men's Basketball team.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Peggy Warren Styons; his daughters, Sherry Hill (Steve) of Washington, NC, Debbie Grant (Joey) of Grandy, NC. and Jackie Woolard (Mark) of Belhaven, NC; his son, Joey Styons (Tiffany) of Jarvisburg, NC; his brother, Wade Styons (Brenda) of Roper, NC; grandchildren, Jimmi Hendricks (Shannon), Mandi Batts (Robbie – predeceased), Chris Woolard (Lindsey), Jason Woolard (Teri), Jessica Faulk (Thomas), Danielle Styons, Ryan Styons, Angel Styons, Chris Styons, and Nicky Styons; bonus grandchildren, Caroline Grant, William Grant, and Andrew Grant; and great-grandchildren, Eli, Anna, JT, Connor, Silas, Ariel, Savannah, Lydia, Landon, Destiny, Jazlynn, Anthony, and Jenna.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Christopher Styons and Bessie Adelaide Hardison Styons, as well as his sister, Mildred Styons Edwards (GC), and two brothers, Cecil Bray Styons (Grace), and Melvin Douglas Styons (Dorothy).
A funeral service to honor Homer's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Journey Christian Church (formerly Elizabeth City Church of Christ), 1923 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 with Steve Hill and Mark Woolard, Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will be at the Saints Delight Church of Christ, Roper, NC.

Homer married me and my second husband at Stoney Brook Church of Christ . We were the first couple married there.What a wonderful Pastor he was. Prayers to Mark and Jackie and his family. Marla Frederick Hufton.
