Joseph Sullivan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Logan-Videon Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. - Broomall on Dec. 8, 2025.
Joseph "Trooper" Sullivan, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 4th, 2025, surrounded by the family he cherished above all else. Beloved son of the late James F. & Alice Marie (née Lucey) Sullivan. Born and raised in Havertown, Joe earned the nickname "Trooper" early in life, a name that stayed with him because it captured exactly who he was. Throughout his life, he was known for resilience, stubborn strength, and a spirit that simply refused to quit. He met every challenge with grit, humor, and a determination that inspired everyone around him.

Joe's early years shaped the man he would become. He grew up at Annunciation BVM School (Class of '76) and was blessed with lifelong friendships from those years. From there, he continued on to Malvern Prep (Class of '80), a place he loved deeply and where he found mentors, teammates, and lifelong brothers. His journey then took him to Lycoming College, graduating in 1984, where he continued to live up to his nickname this time as a linebacker who hit hard, played smart, and carried that same fearless energy into everything else in his life. On and off the field, Troop charged straight into whatever stood before him, clearing a path for the people he cared about. His teammates knew him as the guy who played with heart; his friends knew him as the one who'd stand in front of any challenge and say, "Don't worry-I got this." He carried that same confidence into his career in medical sales, where his ability to connect with people became his hallmark.

That drive and passion showed up most clearly in Joe's love of sports. A Philadelphia sports fan in the purest form, he lived through every exhilarating win and every spectacular heartbreak like he was personally part of the roster. He was a sports encyclopedia, sharing stats faster than most people can recall their own phone numbers. He never turned down a good debate, bold prediction, or playful argument about "where the team went wrong this time."

But Joe didn't just love watching sports, he loved shaping them. For more than 25 years at St. Bernadette's Parish, he poured his heart into coaching football, guiding young athletes with equal parts humor and discipline. Drexel Hill Little League became another of his great joys. For Joe, coaching was about more than the game; it was about building community, forming character, and creating moments and friendships to treasure far beyond the field.

Beyond the fields and sidelines, Trooper had a larger-than-life personality that lit up every room he entered. He had a knack for mischief and a well-honed talent for pranks, always delivered with a twinkle in his eye and a heart full of good intentions. His storytelling was the stuff of legend, animated, detailed, and often punctuated by laughter before he even reached the punchline. Friends and family could sit around him for hours, drawn in by the joy and color he brought to even the simplest memories.

At the center of it all was Joe's deep faith and unwavering pride in his family, both the ones he had and the ones he chose. He found his greatest purpose in the people he loved. He carried that pride quietly but powerfully, in the way he talked about his children and grandchildren, and in the steadfast support he offered to anyone who needed him.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Maureen (née McPoyle) Sullivan, and by his loving children Kevin (Brianne), Erin, Mary Kathleen, Colin, Molly, Daniel, Meghan, Liam, and Maeve. He was the proud "Pop" of Nolan, Liam, Shane, and Baby Sullivan on the way. He is also survived by his siblings Fr. James F. Sullivan, Richard (Janet) Sullivan, Donna (Mark) Tarzwell, Patricia Ann (the late Michael) Gambone, Steven (Kathryn) Sullivan, and is predeceased by Fr. Thomas Sullivan. Joe was the beloved son-in-law of Kathleen M. McPoyle and the late Bernard John McPoyle, and a cherished brother-in-law to many, including Kathleen (Rick) Meekes, Karen McPoyle, Bernard McPoyle, Sean McPoyle, Brian (Stacey) McPoyle, Patricia (Timothy) Gallagher, Bonniejean (Francis) George, Gwen McPoyle, Joseph McPoyle, Mary (Josh) Behl, Brendan (Jennifer) McPoyle, Melissa (Jay) Oxenberg, and the late Jamie McPoyle. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family will forever carry his stories, his humor, his grit, and his example of steadfast love. Though his passing leaves an empty space in the lives of many, his spirit remains-a reminder to stand strong, laugh often, and hold family close.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday evening, December 11th, and 9:30 – 10:45 AM on Friday morning, December 12th, at Annunciation BVM Church, 401 Brookline Blvd, Havertown, PA 19083, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, Livestream. Interment will follow immediately at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA 19064.

Joe lived with courage, laughed with abandon, and loved with conviction. He was truly larger than this life, and his legacy will certainly live on. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Joe's memory be made to Monsignor Bonner–Archbishop Prendergast (Attention: Softball Program), Malvern Preparatory School (In honor of Rev. James Flynn, OSA), or St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church.

My condolences to Maureen and Joe's family. I loved the time we spent together at Sween/Coloplast. Being Joe's manager was a joy. Just thinking about him makes me smile.

Your faith, Joe, and your Irish determination and will to push the rock up the hill of life, while maintaining a kind heart, a sometimes irreverent, but always charming sense of humor, and love of God and family will serve you well on your journey.

I started working for Joe just a few months shy of me having my son and he welcomed me with open arms. Not only that but he allowed me to return to work with my son on my lap for 2 years! He was not the easiest, but he loved hard and was someone who I grew to have great love and care for! Working his business side by side with him is something anyone close to me knows I am forever grateful for. No matter what he was going through he made sure to over delivery to ensure that Fajr and I were well. I learned so much working at WLS and will always be a call away for his family and business. He helped me when times were tough and until this day my son still ask about my "other job" and Joe!
