Passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, with his family by his side.

Joe was born on August 22,1944 to the late Leo J. and Isabel (Moore) Sweeney. He cherished his younger years growing up in Wilmington with his brother. Joe was a proud 1962 graduate of Salesianum. After graduation he married the love of his life Regina Hryckewycz. Together they shared 52 years of marriage.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was deployed to Vietnam serving with the 1st Infantry Division during the Tet Offensive in 1968. When he returned home Joe continued his education earning an associate degree from Goldey Beacom.

Joe liked to be an involved member in his community. He spent many years as an active member of the St. Elizabeth Athletic Association, where he coached youth football and softball. He belonged to the NALC, Vietnam Veterans Association of America, the Defiance Club, Claymore Senior Center, St. Elizabeth R.C. Church and enjoyed going to Delaware Park.

He was a dedicated employee of the US Postal Service for 37 years before retiring in 2004 to focus on his true calling in life, being a grandfather. Grandpop Joe loved being involved in all aspects of his grandchildren's lives from being their #1 sports fan, babysitter, chauffer, advice- giver, riddle teller and more. He was a dedicated and loving grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Regina; daughter, Debbie; and sister-in-law, Eileen.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Kathy Myers (Brian); grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jax (Bryce), and Andrew; his brother, Leo John Sweeney; sister-in-law, Monya Willey (Martin) and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Church, 809 S. Broom St., Wilmington, DE, on Wednesday, Oct 1 at 12:00 pm. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 am – 12:00pm. Burial will take place at All Saints Cemetery.
