Judith “Judy” Carol Sweeney, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and mentor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 20, at the age of 82.

Born on New Year’s Eve, 12/31/1942 in St. Louis, Missouri, Judy dedicated her life to helping others grow and flourish. She spent her career as a high school counselor, guiding countless students with compassion, wisdom, and encouragement. Her gift for listening and her steady support left a lasting mark on the many young lives she touched.

She graduated from Beaumont High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree from University of Missouri Columbia, and her Master’s Degree from University of Missouri St. Louis.

Outside of her career, Judy poured her energy into the things she loved most: traveling, gardening, and giving back to her community. An avid traveler, she delighted in exploring new places and cultures, always returning home with photos and stories to share and inspiration for her next journey. At home, her garden was her sanctuary. As a certified Master Gardener, she shared her passion for plants generously, volunteering her time and talents at the Missouri Botanical Garden for 15 years. Her own home garden bloomed under her care, a reflection of her patience, knowledge, and joy in nurturing life.

Her greatest love, however, was for her family. She cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren, celebrating milestones both big and small, and creating traditions that will be carried forward in her honor. She loved spending time taking her grandchildren to local performances, the St. Louis Zoo, Magic House, and the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

She is survived by her daughter Jenny (Carl), son Jon (Grace), grandchildren Josh, Madison, Lucas, and Anastasia, sister Jan, nephew David, and niece Sarah. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and June Wehmeyer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Her life was a beautiful example of kindness, service, and growth—much like the gardens she so lovingly tended.
