Joseph "Joe" Bruce Tate, 81, of Maylene, Alabama, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. A proud veteran of the United States Army, a devoted family man, and a loyal friend, Joe lived a quiet and honorable life rooted in service, strength, and love.
Born on June 26, 1944, Joe answered his country's call and served bravely in the Vietnam War. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, he exemplified courage, loyalty, and sacrifice-values that stayed with him throughout his life. His service to his country was one of his proudest achievements.
After returning home, Joe built a life of simplicity and meaning in Maylene, Alabama. He was a man of few needs and deep contentment-a simple man who was not hard to please. He found joy in life's quiet moments: watching the deer from his window, relaxing in his recliner with the TV on, and spending time with his beloved dog, Maggie. Joe also had a major sweet tooth and never turned down a dessert especially if it came with a cup of coffee and good company.

Above all, Joe cherished time with his family especially with his wife, Shirley, to whom he was married for 62 years. Their relationship was filled with deep love, loyalty, and laughter. Joe loved being by her side, even when she was giving him a hard time-and perhaps especially then. Their bond was one of genuine companionship and enduring devotion.

Joe's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His life was a model of quiet strength, hard work, and unconditional love. He was the kind of man who made everyone feel safe and cared for, simply by being present.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Tate; his sons, Lee Tate and Greg Tate; and his grandchildren, Morgan Seay, Hunter Tate, Zac Tate, and Alyssa Sumner. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Sage Tate, Bonnie Tate, Will Seay, and Maddux Sumner. His family will continue to honor his legacy by living out the values he embodied every day.

A memorial service to celebrate Joe's life will be held at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama, on August 5, 2025, at 1:15 PM.
