Josephine Mahl Sweeney, affectionately known as Josie, passed away on August 30, 2025, in Covington, Louisiana. She was born on October 19, 1940, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Josie dedicated much of her life to her career, excelling in bookkeeping and accounting, a field where her skills and diligence shone brightly.
A former resident of Chalmette, Louisiana, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cousin. Josie is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Dennis Sweeney. She also leaves behind her son, Kerrell Patrick Sweeney, and his wife, Suzanne Foles Sweeney. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, her prince, Trace Patrick Sweeney and her princess, Abbey Grace Sweeney, who brought her great joy.
Josie is also remembered by her first cousins, Ransdell Mark Hebert and Jacqueline Mahl Gerstner and their children, who carry fond memories of their time together.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frederick Joseph Mahl, Sr., and her mother, Bernadette Adam Mahl Ward. Josie also mourned the loss of her brothers, Frederick Joseph Mahl, Jr., Calrence Joseph Mahl, Sr., Alvin Narcisse Mahl, and Chris Jacob Mahl, Sr. Their memories remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
Josie's gentle spirit and dedication to her family and career will be cherished by all who knew her. She is deeply missed.
