Joy Cannon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd. - Washington on Feb. 8, 2026.
A woman of noble character, Joy Merle Cannon, age 95, went to her Heavenly home on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at OSF, St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Joy was born on July 3, 1930 in Fulton County, Salem, Arkansas, the daughter of Ruell Isaac and Flora Luna Chadwick Fry. She was united in marriage to George "GL" Cannon on December 28, 1952 in Grayville, IL; he preceded her in death on February 24, 2022, after nearly 70 years of marriage.

Her daughters, Diana (Dale) Hovey and Janice (Gary) Witt, survive, as well as grandchildren: Brandon (Amanda) Hovey, Grant Hovey, and Megan (Ben) Childers; great-grandsons: Cannon, Theodore, and Elias Childers; her step-grandchildren: Jennifer Spencer and Christopher Hovey; step-great-grandchildren: Darian and Dalton; her brother, Jim (late Deanne) Fry; and many nieces and nephews.

Faith in Jesus was the foundation of Joy's life. She was an active member in the churches she attended, most recently: RoLand Manor Baptist of Sunnyland and First Baptist of Morton. She enjoyed listening to the teachings of Dr. David Jeremiah and Rev. Robert Schuler as well as gospel music from the Gaither family television program. Family was also very important to Joy, so a tradition passed down from generation to generation was the annual family reunion which always included singing classic country gospel in four part harmony.

Majoring in Home Economics at Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale, Joy developed extraordinary culinary skills. She began her career working for Home Extension in Marion, IL, where she met and married George, probably since the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Her fruit torte was even featured in the Peoria Journal Star! After marrying, Joy began a career in elementary education in Creve Coeur. She touched the lives of countless students, making a significant impact on their lives through her caring relationships earning her a spot in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" an honorary publication that recognizes outstanding educators nominated by former students who were themselves high-achievers.

In addition, Joy's life inspired and encouraged family, friends, and colleagues through her wisdom, strength and consistent confidence. Substantial expressions of gratitude were heard throughout the years.

Memorial contributions may be made to RoLand Manor Baptist Church of Sunnyland, or First Baptist Church of Morton.

Private interment is at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.A Celebration of Life is scheduled at a future date yet to be determined.

Diana, I´m so very sorry about your moms passing, but I know she was estactic about seeing Jesus, and hearing well done my good and faithful servant. She was so happy to see her love and best friend her sweet husband (GL). What a reunion for them. I know my mom (Pat) and your mom had to have their own celebration seeing each other. You and your sister have such good memories and they do become your treasures. Love you my friend, Sheree
