Carolyn Joy Thackston Townsend, born on July 9, 1946, in
Montgomery, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, in
Flat Rock, North Carolina, at the age of 79. Her journey through life was one of love, faith, and generosity, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Joy's life was a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the power of faith. Her father's career in the Air Force instilled in her a love for travel and the ability to make friends wherever she went. In January 1973, she married the love of her life, Bill Townsend, whose career in the Army took them on many adventures together. Their love story spanned 53 beautiful years, rooted in mutual respect and unwavering support. In 1979, Bill and Joy visited the Flat Rock area and found it so peaceful and relaxing, that they made their forever home here in 1981.
A skilled machine operator at Kyocera in
Fletcher, NC, and later a dedicated worker in food service, including at Cracker Barrel in Flat Rock, Joy was known for her strong work ethic and friendly demeanor. Her colleagues remember her as a woman who brought joy and laughter to any room she entered.
Joy's passions were as diverse as they were heartfelt. She found immense joy in crafting ceramic knickknacks and baking delicious treats, often sharing her creations with friends and family. Nature was Joy's sanctuary. She adored flowers, birds, and all of God's creations. Birds were so special to her and she even had a collection of bird figurines and kept the bird feeders filled so she could enjoy watching them daily. Horseback riding was another cherished pastime in her younger years, and her home was often filled with the gentle presence of horses and even a pony.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Although she did not attend church as often as she would have liked, her relationship with God was personal and profound. Her spiritual gift of generosity was evident in her actions, as she often baked cakes and cookies not for profit, but to bring joy to those around her. Joy made award winning desserts in both Alabama and North Carolina, and shared her baking skills with her family, passing them down through the generations.
Family camping trips, complete with tents and campfires, were some of her fondest memories. These adventures were filled with laughter, love, and the simple pleasures of life.
After suffering a stroke in 2021, Joy moved to Hendersonville Health and Rehab, where she spent the last years of her life. There, she continued to touch lives, forming deep friendships and participating enthusiastically in activities like Bingo and exercise classes.
Preceded in death by her parents, Holly Ruth Tatum Thackston and Richard James Thackston; her sisters, Patricia "Patty" Gartland and Violet Thackston; and her son-in-law, Christopher George, Joy leaves behind a family that adored her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, William "Bill" Thomas Townsend of
Flat Rock, NC; her son, Thomas Paul Townsend of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her daughter, Rachel Michelle George of Knoxville, Tennessee; and her beloved granddaughters, Jasmine Marie George of New Orleans, LA, and Kristina Michelle George of
Hendersonville, NC.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 1:00 to 1:45 pm at the Chapel at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 538 Tracey Grove Road,
