Lorna Joy Pointon Weeks, born on April 15th 1945 in Malvern, South Australia to parents Horace Morrell Pointon and Doris Lorna Faulkner, lived a joyful life that spanned continents sharing her love with anyone that knew her.
In her childhood, Joy grew up in the foothills of Adelaide, South Australia, surrounded by the beauty of the Australian countryside. She was a shy girl that loved to read books, spend quiet moments in the garden, play the piano and netball, and eagerly anticipated spending summer vacations in Victor Harbor, South Australia with her parents and three siblings, Bruce, Faye and Barbara. Joy cultivated a love of nature, spending many hours in her father's garden learning about the flora and fauna, which she carried throughout her life.
As a young adult, she secured her first job working for the Bank of South Australia but quickly learned that was not her passion. Joy loved airplanes and wanted to fly. She followed her dreams by relocating to Sydney, Australia as an airline stewardess for Ansett Airlines. She loved this new job and found her confidence in meeting new people everyday.
It was during this time that Joy met the love of her life, a U.S. Marine Aviator from America, Harry E Weeks Jr. They fell in love and Joy made the courageous decision to leave her beloved family and home of Australia to start a new life in the United States with Harry. They were married on February 1, 1969 on the Marine base in
Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Together, Joy and Harry made a transformative decision to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This marked the beginning of their lifelong journey of faith as they started their new family. Joy was full of life and creativity as a young mom to six children: Sharyn, Colleen, Heidi, Andrew, Philip, and Christina. She shared with her family her faith, love of music, arts, good literature and appreciation for the many cultures around the world. Above all, she had a deep love for her Savior, Jesus Christ, who she called, "my friend."
Joy and Harry lived in many places around the world including Jacksonville, NC, Cleveland, OH Salt Lake City and Orem, UT, Melbourne, Australia and Singapore, before starting their retirement in Pleasant Grove UT. They made lasting friendships with countless people around the globe. Joy served her family and her church community earning a reputation as a sweet, loving, positive, charitable and lighthearted joy to anyone that came in contact with her. Joy and Harry had the opportunity to serve a full-time mission in the Wisconsin, Milwaukee mission sharing the Light of Christ with others. She had a love for travel and adventure, and in her retirement enjoyed traveling abroad, occasionally being seen on the back of Harry's Harley.
