Joyce Joan Montag was born in
West Bend, Iowa on June 6, 1942, to Mariam Jensen and Leo "Jap" Montag. She was joined by a sister, Donna, in 1945. Joyce spent her days with friends, cousins, and family growing up in West Bend. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and worked at the "casino" at the Grotto. Joyce graduated from West Bend School in 1960 and enjoyed many years of reunions with her classmates. After high school, Joyce worked at the local bank and enjoyed time bowling.
Joyce met Thomas John Bormann at the Star Ballroom during a friend's wedding. They spent the next year dancing and got married on June 11, 1966, in the church where Joyce grew up. They were married 57 years before Tom passed in 2023.
Joyce and Tom welcomed three boys and one daughter into their family. Their daughter, Joan, died shortly after birth. With their boys, Joyce and Tom farmed in the Livermore, St Joe, and Bode areas. Most importantly they were active in the St Joseph Catholic Church. Tom was a fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus and Joyce was active with the Catholic Daughters of America. If there was a need or call to service, Tom and Joyce did not hesitate. They spent several years attending and traveling to the many events of the Knights and both were honored for their service in 2021.
Joyce loved to talk and was always moving onto the next conversation before the first one was finished. She would spend hours on the phone catching up with friends and when her boys left home, she still spoke to them almost every day. Joyce also loved her crafts and was always looking for the next craft to make and the directions to do it. In her last few years, she spent hours coloring and searching for a word.
Joyce's greatest accomplishments were her boys. She was very proud of the men they became and the women they chose for their wives. Joyce never hesitated when her children or grandchildren needed her. Always with Tom, they were at almost every event that involved their grandchildren. If her sons and wives needed time away, she was there to make sure the grandkids were taken care of. Throughout the years, Joyce and Tom also cared for many neighboring children. There was always room for anyone to be welcomed in the family.
After retirement, Joyce loved traveling with Tom to see cousins, the countryside or their most favorite destination, Branson. Joyce especially loved Branson because it was where she could see her favorite Irish Tenor, Daniel O'Donnell.
Joyce and Tom lived in the farmhouse they built until 2021 when they moved in with their son, Bill, and his family due to failing health. She spent last year residing in the memory care unit at Edencrest of Beaverdale in Des Moines.
Joyce Bormann of Bode, Iowa passed into eternity on February 6, 2026. She was 83 years old.
Left to keep Joyce's memory alive are her three sons, their wives, and children; Larry, Mary and children Jason (wife Sara and children Olivia and Eva) and Chris (wife Katie and children Morgan and Theo); Bill and Tammy and children Alex, Belle, Ben; and Tim and Sara and children Lilly, Clara, and Henry as well as Joyce's sister, Donna, and her siblings in law, Norm and Deb Bormann and Francis and Karol Bormann.
Welcoming Joyce to heaven were her husband, Tom, and daughter, Joan; also her parents, Mariam and Leo Montag, and her parents in law, John and Clara Bormann, as well as a lifetime of friends and relatives.
Thank you to Edencrest of Beaverdale for the precious care they helped us give Joyce in this past year. Many thanks to all our loved ones for your prayers and condolences.
