Joyce Amelia Hahn was an outgoing, optimistic woman who enjoyed spreading her joy with anyone she met. Born March 14, 1931 in
Trenton, New Jersey, she had an adventurous spirit. She moved from New Jersey to Florida in 1955, then to California in 1972. From then on, California was home.
Two significant moments of Joyce's life were meeting J. Arthur "Art" Hahn, Jr in 1973 and marrying him in January 1974. Joyce had three children from her first marriage, and Art had five children from his. Joyce and Art successfully blended their family and shared their love for one another during the 47 years of their marriage, until Art passed away at 88 years old in October 2020.
Joyce and Art liked to share their story with people everywhere they went with this large group of kids, from frequent camping trips at San Gregorio beach to visits to Lake Tahoe and boating from Santa Cruz across the Monterey Bay. Do you see the trend here? Joyce and Art both loved being near or on the water!
They lived in many places during their years together, almost always near a body of water. From Santa Cruz to Redwood Shores to Lake Tahoe, they finally settled in Arroyo Grande near Morro Bay. They lived in Arroyo Grande for 20 years, where they enjoyed visiting Avila Beach and walking along the boardwalk.
Joyce changed careers many times during her adult life. She earned a BA in Interior Design from Douglass College (part of Rutgers Univ) and later worked as an Interior Designer in Miami, Florida, as well as substitute teaching. Once in California, she spent many years as a real estate agent in the Santa Cruz mountains, selling homes, but also selling land to those who wanted to build a home. She loved to put on her hiking boots to walk acreage with potential buyers searching for the survey markers. Joyce continued working in real estate when she and Art moved to Redwood Shores in San Mateo County.
When she and Art moved to Lake Tahoe, Joyce segued to booking vacation rentals, along with becoming a photographer for Lake Tahoe's Homes & Lands magazine. Photography was another great passion of Joyce's and she enjoyed being able to merge those skills with her real estate experience.
Joyce's other lifetime love was music. She had perfect pitch, played classical piano and spent many years singing with the Sweet Adelines, women's Barbershop harmony. She sang with Sweet Adeline choruses and quartets in the Miami area in Florida, as well as in Santa Cruz, San Francisco and San Jose, California. Joyce's personality was made for being on stage and she excelled. She sang lead in many quartets over the years. Her highlight was singing lead with the Fourth Dimension, her quartet in Miami FL, that won a regional competition and went to Hawaii to compete internationally!
Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband, Art, her son, Andrew Hahn and her sister Shirley Henke. She is survived by her other children, Cheryl Cormia (Gary), Greg Scott (Gloria), Bev Keegan, Jim Hahn, Stephanie Riehle (Paul), Bridget Hahn and Alison Hahn (Tim), her daughter-in-law Audrey Jablonszki-Hahn, her nephew Danferd Henke, her niece Holly Henke, her 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Joyce and Art wanted to have their ashes combined and scattered over a body of water. We intend to honor their wishes sometime in Spring 2026 when our family will celebrate Joyce and Art's lives together.
