Joyce Jiles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thompson - Larson Funeral Home, Minot on Dec. 9, 2025.
Joyce E. Jiles, 83, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2025, in her home.
Joyce Elizabeth Haaland was born January 19, 1942, the daughter of Arne and Thelma (Moe) Haaland. She was raised and educated in Carpio, graduating from Carpio High School. Following high school, Joyce went on to study a secretarial course for a year at Minot State College.
In 1962, she moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she met Virgil Jiles, the love of her life in the parking lot of MetLife Insurance where she worked. They were married at the Carpio Lutheran Church on August 29, 1964.
Over their forty-seven years of marriage, they shared an exceptionally happy life, residing in various locations including Belen, NM, El Paso, TX, Sierra Vista, AZ, Grand Forks, ND, and Williston, ND. They were known for their shared love of laughter and storytelling. While Virgil often prompted the tales, it was Joyce who commanded the room, turning life's small incidents into hilarious spectacles that left everyone roaring with laughter.
Joyce's number one hobby was cooking. She had big stacks of cookbooks and was exceptionally good at making great meals. She truly could have been a chef. Often, she would be cooking a cake or muffins or something else in the oven and telling some story at the same time. She would interrupt her story and say, "I have to check the oven." Whatever she cooked would be perfectly done. Quite a number of fantastic holiday dinners were held at Joyce and Virgil's home.
She is survived by her three brothers and their wives, James and Adele Haaland, Roger and Susan Haaland and Brent Haaland; sister-in-law and her husband, Susan and Earl Lindanger; sister-in-law, Effe Jiles; nieces, Laura (Haaland) and Mike Grueneberg, Angie Haaland, Sonja (Haaland) and Ron Johnson, Sherry (Haaland) and Shawn Walker; nephews, Aaron and Wendy (Bock) Haaland, Arlyn Haaland, Jerome Haaland, Ryan and Samantha (Bradford) Bryans.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil; brother-in-law, James Curtis Jiles; nephew, Thomas Haaland.
Celebration of Life Service: A service was held Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold, ND.
