At the age of 92, Joyce Velgersdyk of Bloomington, Minnesota peacefully passed away on October 27, 2022. Joyce Thelma Velgersdyk was born on June 10, 1930, in Rock Valley, Iowa to Sam and Anna (DeWit) Kooima. She lived and worked on the family farm until she married Clarence Velgersdyk on June 13, 1951, and had four children, all born in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In 1963 Joyce and Clarence moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to be closer to family. In her lifetime, she helped support the family by being employed as an aircraft assembler at Lear Aircraft, a mail sorter at the US Post Office, manager of Nielsen Framing Studio, and in food service, specializing in preparing Dutch desserts at Honeywell Inc.
She was a loyal member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church and Redeemer Reformed Church where she was involved in Ladies' Society, Sunday school, Senior Adventures, hymn sings and Bible studies. Joyce graduated Rock Valley Christian School and later Metropolitan College in Minneapolis earning her Associate degree in Business. She also enjoyed travel, gardening, baking and entertaining friends and family in her home.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Anna (DeWit) Kooima; sisters, Marjorie Gaalswyk, Frieda Gaalswyk, Genevieve Mans; and brothers, Jake and John.
She will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 71 years, Clarence; children, John (Janice), Roxane (Mike) Jeltema, Kevin (Laura) and Jason (Sandi); 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at Washburn-McReavy Bloomington Chapel (2300 W. Old Shakopee Rd., Bloomington) on Tuesday, November 1, from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 2, at 1 PM with visitation one hour prior at Redeemer Reformed Church (1300 Lilac Drive N., Golden Valley). Memorials preferred to Avail Academy or Alzheimer's Association. Interment in Dawn Valley Memorial Park.
