Obituary published on Legacy.com by Giberson Funeral Home - Madison on Feb. 20, 2026.
Joyce Angenette Smith Walter passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Douglasville, GA, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. She had been lovingly surrounded by family and friends since suffering a stroke on January 30. She was born in
Winthrop, ME, on December 6, 1940, to Alice Virginia (Lyons) Smith and Wesley Arthur Smith.
Joyce grew up in Anson and attended school in Madison. She married Clifton Reginald Walter in Madison on November 1, 1957. While Clif worked at Kennebec River Pulp & Paper Co. for many years, Joyce made a loving home for their growing family in Madison. Clif and Joyce later owned and operated Hidden Acres dairy farm in Madison as well as the Bingham Motor Inn in Bingham. After living in Leeds for several years, Clif and Joyce retired to
Carrollton, GA.
Joyce was a longtime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She held many callings in the church and could always be counted on to volunteer when service for others was needed. For several years, Clif and Joyce traveled to Boston every month to serve as workers in the LDS Boston Temple.
Joyce loved spending time with her mother and especially with her beloved sister, Janie. Joyce and Janie shopped, lunched, and worked on church activities and in the LDS temple together. Janie always had a new craft project that she was working on to share with Joyce.
Joyce was up for almost any activity that Clif, her kids, or her grandkids proposed. Those adventures included riding a camel in Morocco with Clif, driving (and crashing) Scottie's mini bike, hiking to the bottom of Bryce Canyon, speeding to Solon with Kevvie in his LeMans at 90+ mph, snowmobiling, zip-lining with Christina, but it was a hard no to hanggliding with Vicki and Amy.
Joyce, or Honey as she was known by many of her grandchildren, enjoyed shopping for antiques, clothes, Christmas decorations, Black Friday shopping with Becky, and apparently cheese. She especially loved the day-long trips to her favorite clothing store, not just for the shopping but also the chance to spend the whole day together with people she loved. Her greatest joy was just spending time with the people she cared about. If your car was moving and you asked her along, she went wherever the car took you both.
Joyce enjoyed reading on her Kindle, making quilts for her family, gardening and caring for her rose bushes, and most recently, ceramics. She loved to travel, and she enjoyed many trips with her family around the world.
Besides her parents, Joyce was also predeceased by her husband of 63 years, her eternal partner Clifton, and her beloved sister, Janice V. Smith, and half-brother Peter Walker. She is survived by her five children: Vicki Jane Walter Judd of Covington, GA, Clifton Scott Walter of North
Anson, ME, Kevin Erik Walter (Wendy Collins) of Rockport, ME, Christina Rae Walter Morrison (John) of Douglasville, GA, and Rebecca Jo Walter Scott (Wes) of Villa Rica, GA; her grandchildren, Amy Lee Judd (Jeff Hamilton) of Powder Springs, GA, Joshua Bissell of California, Corey Scott Walter of Waldoboro, ME, Erin Joyce Walter of Camden, ME, Nicole Alexis Walter of Bristol, ME, Jason Erik Walter (Jessica Winchenbaugh) of Rockland, ME, Reilly Jo Walter Pearson (Trey) of Cumming, GA, and Reagan Brooke Walter of Villa Rica, GA; step grandchildren Katherine Lynn (Anthony) of Canton, GA, Jason Morrison (Amber) of Lovejoy, GA, and Serena Gohs (Geoff) of Wilmington, NC; 14 great grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren; brother Thomas (Butch) R. O'Hara, Jr. of Sun City, AZ; nieces Judy Smith of Norridgewock, ME, and Melissa Walker of FL, nephews Walter Smith of
Madison, ME, and Mike Smith of Skowhegan, ME, special nephew Timothy Dickey of North
Anson, ME, and several cousins.
