Joye Woodard Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 18, 2025.
Joye Lucinda Woodard, age 63, of Clinton, Mississippi passed away September 11, 2025, at USA Trauma Center in Mobile, Alabama. She was born September 28, 1961 to the late William Carl, Jr "W.C." and Lula Belle Howell Woodard of Lucedale.

Joye was a graduate of George County High School and MGCCC (Perkinston). She then attended Mississippi State University where she earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Upon graduation from MSU, she accepted a position with the US Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner and moved to Alexandria, VA. Joye's son James (Jamie) was born in Alexandria. After Jamie's birth, Joye decided to leave the Patent Office and return to Mississippi in order to be nearer to family. She earned an associate degree through the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. After completing her studies through UMMC, Joye worked as a Medical Technologist at the VA Hospital in Jackson. Following Jamie's tragic loss, Joye returned to the Patent Office until retirement.

Joye loved her dog Clarabelle, her sweet cats and MSU football! She enjoyed playing chess with Robert and loved being outdoors in nature. She took pleasure from feeding and watching birds (and deer). Sitting by a fire in the evening was a special time for Joye.

In addition to her parents, Joye was preceded in death by her beloved son, James Matthew Woodard; grandparents, William Carl Sr and Mildred Reeves Woodard, George Curtis and Ray Belle Howell; brother, William "David" Woodard.

Those left to cherish her memory include sister, Janice Woodard Goggans (George); brother, Jason "Brian" Woodard (Jeannine); close friend and companion, Robert Walters; numerous other relatives and friends.

Joye expressed to family that she wished to be cremated and did not wish to have a memorial service. Her final resting place will be at the Woodard Cemetery in Bexley. The date has yet to be determined.

Joye,

News of your passing took the wind out of the sails of your friends at the Patent Office. It´s hard to imagine that so much time has passed since we spent nights bowling at, the now defunct, Rinaldi´s Bowling Alley, in the Patent Office Bowling League, back in the early nineties. I guess that´s where I first met you. An intelligent, beautiful person, with an infectious laugh, beautiful smile, mischievous grin, sharp wit, and a heart of gold. Oh, and a very strong southern accent. I was very surprised when I learned that "you enjoyed playing chess with Robert". I never knew you played!

Life dealt you an inequitable hand. Despite the adversity that you encountered, you were strong, and dealt with it well. Through it all, you were resilient. I hope those whose lives you touched will find solace in fond memories they have of you. I saw firsthand what the death of my brother did to my mother. For you, that pain is over. May you be at peace with Jamie in Heaven.
