Obituary of Juan D Barela
Juan De Dios Barela, age 79, of Albuquerque passed away December 11, 2022 from a brief battle of stomach cancer, surrounded by friends and family.
Juan was born in Tajique, NM March 17, 1943 to Andres and Sadie Barela. After graduating from Rio Grande High school in 1962, he joined the Army during the Vietnam era. He enjoyed going oversees and being in the artillery division. He worked and retired from Hope Christian School after 33 years as the custodian, bus driver and handyman, where he was loved by staff and students.
Juan was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife Sylvia and daughter Kena, husband Peter and grandsons John Pacheco and the late Erik Pacheco. His siblings: Mary Mora, Yolanda Alderete, husband Paul, Orlando Barela, wife Marcela and many nephews and nieces. Juan was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Clara Armijo, Helen Perez, George, Leroy, Jose and Bolias Barela.
Juan enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Juan and Sylvia took many road trips around the U.S. to visit family and would have the opportunity to visit Europe. He was very curious and adventurous; he would make cardboard box forts and play with his grandson until one of them would fall asleep. Most importantly was his strong Christian faith, he was incredibly patient and loving and taught us about the lord. Thank you and we love you.
A special thank you to the staff at the VA hospice for their care during his time.
A memorial service will be held at Crossroad Church of Albuquerque 5200 Marble Ave NE, Monday, December 26, 2022, at 1100am.
