Judge Robert C. Shelton Jr.

Judge Robert C. Shelton, Jr., passed away peacefully on Friday, June 9th, 2023 at The Chelsea in Sparta with his family at his side.
Born on April 14, 1934 to Helen and Robert C. Shelton Sr., Judge Shelton was raised in Franklin, NJ. He attended Seton Hall Law School, graduating in 1955 with a BA in Classical Languages and Philosophy. In 1958, he graduated first in his class from the Seton Hall School of Law, where he was also awarded the John Kean Award for Scholastic Achievement. He was a senior partner at his firm, Shelton and Koch, before becoming an attorney with the U.S. District Court, District of NJ. He then moved on to be the First Assistant Prosecutor from 1963-1973. Judge Shelton became a Court Judge and served from 1976-1977 in Sussex County. He was a Member of the General Assembly from 1974-1976. So far, he is the last Democrat to be elected from Sussex County. Judge Shelton then became a Superior Court Judge, New Jersey and served from 1977-1985. He continued practicing law up until recently. He was also an exempt member of the Ogdensburg Fire Department. Judge Shelton enjoyed traveling, especially to Italy, his favorite place. In his free time, he had a wide array of hobbies and interests. He was a photographer, ham radio operator (N2EDF), opera afficianado, church choir member, and was talented with computer assembly and repair, as well as a licensed private pilot.
Predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Edward J. Shelton, James E. Shelton and Peter W. Shelton, as well as his beloved son, Robert C. Shelton, III (2006). Survived by his son, Edward (Maria Nikolayew) Shelton, and his three daughters; Andrea (Richard) Younkers, Mary (Edward) Kelleher and Katie (Jake) Mull. Loving grandfather to: Jennelle, Rob, Dan, Mindy, Robert, Rhyan, Devan, Jackie, Jocelyn, and Kassandra. Adoring great grandfather of 8.
The family will receive their friends on Sunday, June 11th, 2023 from 3-7 PM at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, One Main Street, Franklin, NJ. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, June 12th, 12PM at Good Shephard R.C. Church, 48 Tranquility Road (Rt. 517), Andover, NJ 07821. Burial will be private
