Judith "Judy" (Horvitz) Bernstein passed away in
Greenwich, CT on February 22, 2026. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Dr. Herbert Bernstein. Judy was born on October 10, 1929 in
Chicago, IL, the cherished daughter of the late Rabbi Abraham and Eva Horvitz. She spent her early childhood in
Madison, WI and her high school years in New York City. Judy met Herbert, the love of her life, while attending New York University, where she received a bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and Elementary Education. She married Herbert in 1951 and the couple lived in
Petersburg, VA,
Leavenworth, KS, and
Philadelphia, PA before settling in
Brockton, MA for more than 50 years. Judy was a teacher throughout her life, working in the New York City School System and Brockton Community School Program before pursuing a master's degree in Communication Arts and Sciences from Bridgewater State College. She became a lecturer there as well as at Massasoit Community College and Northeastern
University.
Judy was devoted to numerous Jewish causes and served as President of the Brockton chapter of the Hadassah Medical Organization and Vice President of Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton. Judy was known for her contagious laugh, riveting storytelling, and beautiful singing voice. She loved spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, leading family events and holiday gatherings, and researching and documenting her family history. Judy created and performed one-woman musical shows combining her talent as a lyric soprano with her love of storytelling. She also presented original educational shows about American history in venues throughout New England, presidential libraries across the country and, to her great pride, the White House Visitor Center in Washington, DC. Some of her favorite shows she created were I Slept with George Washington, First Lady of the World - The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt, Dinner at the White House and Hail to the Ladies. Judy is survived by her daughters, Beth Brivic (Robert Salter) of
Irvington, NY and Sherry Bernstein Fogel of
Fairfield, CT. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Max, Samuel, and Skyler Brivic, and Allison and Charles "C.J." Fogel. She was predeceased by her beloved brothers, Morton Horvitz and David "Cookie" Horvitz.
