Peter Gradsten Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Your Traditions Cremation and Funeral Chapel on Feb. 23, 2026.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Stephan Gradsten, who departed this world peacefully in his home on February 16, 2026. Born on August 5, 1950 in New York, Peter led a life filled with adventure, creativity, and boundless love. He faced his long battle with Parkinson's disease while maintaining a zest for life, demonstrating his resilience.

Peter was the beloved son of Marcel Gradsten and Elfriede Gradsten, who instilled in him a passion for learning and a curiosity about the world. He carried these gifts into the world of Academia. Peter Graduated from Columbia University in 1974 and furthered his education with a Master's degree from NYU in 1976.

Prior to his professional endeavors, Peter wore many hats. He worked as a postal worker, a taxi driver, and a surgical technician. He even worked for a Circus! Peter later carved a niche for himself in the world of computer programming, where his creativity and logic coalesced. He was an intelligent man with a knack for coding.

On September 19, 1992, Peter married the love of his life, Darunee Gradsten. Together they built a beautiful life of over 34 years, raising two wonderful daughters, Tanida Gradsten and Cyndi Gradsten, who were the joy of his existence. Peter was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first and supporting them with unwavering love and a quick wit that never failed to bring laughter into their home.

Beyond his family and career, Peter was a man of many passions. His love for music was evident in his mastery of the guitar, electric keyboard, and piano. He was not only a performer but a composer of blues music, sharing his melodies with all who were fortunate enough to listen. Peter's adventurous spirit led him to skydive, travel nomadically, and even enjoy a stint working with a circus; testament to his zest for life and willingness to embrace the unknown.

Peter's kindness extended beyond humans, as he was a lover of animals and nature, seeing beauty and wonder in every living thing. His intelligence and selflessness were hallmarks of his personality, as was his great sense of humor, which remained intact even in the face of adversity.

A service to celebrate Peter's life will be held on February 23rd, at Your Traditions Funeral Home, located at 2118 Constitution Blvd, Sarasota, Fl 34231.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota for their compassionate care and support during Peter's final days.

Peter Stephen Gradsten leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and light. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
