Judith Hinson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shives Funeral Home - Trenholm Road Chapel on Dec. 2, 2025.
Judith C. Hinson slipped her earthly bonds and entered the presence of her Lord on Sunday, November 30, 2025. Judy was born on November 9, 1942. She was quick to inform listeners that she was born in her grandfather Jones' house in Great Falls, SC, during a "blackout" exercise which was common in America during World War II. Judy was the first child born to Edgar H. Christopher and Grace J. Christopher.

Judy attended public schools in Great Falls, SC and enjoyed her relationships with schoolmates and teachers. During her high school years, she served as the official scorekeeper for the men's and women's basketball teams. The accuracy of her scorekeeping was never questioned. Judy was an active member of Great Falls First Baptist Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior as a teenager.

After graduating from high school, Judy moved to Columbia to pursue her work career. This ultimately led to employment in the U.S. Civil Service at Fort Jackson, SC. While residing in Columbia, Judy was able to continue her relationship with her high school sweetheart. This relationship led to matrimony and a marriage that has lasted 58 years. She married her true love on September 2, 1967. This year they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. In the early years of their marriage, Judy had to serve as head of the household, as well as mother and father to her children, as her husband was frequently deployed to remote locations due to military responsibility. One example of her challenges during this time was driving in the harsh winter weather conditions while living in Brunswick, Maine. On one occasion, a wheel froze to the axle and could not be turned, leaving her skidding down the road until she could determine what was happening. She was ever faithful to her calling as wife and mother, even under the most difficult of circumstances.

As Judy's children became less dependent on her, she began to take on responsibilities outside her home. Her compassion and concern for senior adults led her to volunteer in support of Senior Adult Education in Florence County, SC. In June, 1994, she was formally recognized by Florence School District One for "Dedicated Service to the Education of Adults". Later on, while living in Raleigh, NC, Judy again showed her compassionate side by working with children whose lives were severely impacted by health issues such as cerebral palsy and other medical conditions.

In 2003, Judy and her husband moved to Columbia, SC to pursue their retirement plans. Immediately after settling in, they joined Shanon Baptist Church where she became a faithful member of her Sunday School class. She also served on the Hospitality Committee and supported the Internationals Program by preparing meals for program members. While at Shandon, Judy was a member of the "Knit Wits", a group of church members who knitted caps, sweaters and other articles for "Guide Post Kids" worldwide.

Judy is survived by her husband, Louie C. Hinson, one son, Christopher Hinson (Stansell), two daughters, Lisa Anderson (Clay) and Kelly Rabon, five grandchildren- Trace Rabon, Oliver Rabon, Campbell Rabon, Miller Anderson and Ellis Anderson. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters and several nieces and nephews, and a special family friend.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 10th, at 12:30 pm, in the Shives Funeral Home Chapel, located at 7600 Trenholm Rd. Extension, Columbia SC. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at 2:00 pm, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Shandon Baptist Church, sent to Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, Columbia SC 29206 or online at www.Shandon.org
