Judith Ann Long-Hess, 76, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on October 17, 1949, in Indianapolis to Anna Verlee (Newby) and William E. Loftus, Judy lived a life rooted in care for others, quiet creativity, and deep devotion to her family.

Judy found joy in the simple, beautiful things—cheering on her grandchildren at sporting events and performances; riding in the convertible with the top down; spending time outside on the porch and patio; visiting with neighbors; nurturing her houseplants; and spending time coloring—often creating moments of calm and comfort wherever she was. She was a hairstylist for 30 years—the last 20 at Silver Shears in Plainfield—where she built lasting friendships with those who sat in her chair. Known affectionately as “Rudy” to fellow stylists, she brought warmth, humor, and a sense of ease to everyone she met.

In addition to her work behind the chair, Judy spent over 20 years as a Mary Kay consultant, a role she embraced with pride and enthusiasm. She loved helping others feel confident and cared for, extending her natural gift for connection well beyond the salon.

Judy was also deeply connected to a close-knit circle of lifelong friends. As a member of the first four-year graduating class of Northwest High School on the west side of Indianapolis in 1967, she maintained treasured friendships that spanned decades. In her retirement, she cherished time with her cousins and girlfriends—traveling to Florida, gathering for breakfast (often at lunchtime), and playing dominoes—simple moments shaped with great joy and infectious laughter.

On June 30, 2001, Judy married William “Bill” Hess in Plainfield, beginning a partnership that spanned 24 years. Together, they built a life grounded in companionship, family, and shared memories.

More than anything, Judy was a devoted mother, Mimi, and Great-Mimi. She leaves behind her children, Lori A. Long, Kristopher W. Long (Angie), and Amy M. Schweitzer (Chris); and four cherished grandchildren, Hannah J. Everling (Greg), Grace A. Long (Dawson Cranfill), C. Isaac Schweitzer, and Judith Ann “Annie” Schweitzer. Her legacy continues through her great-granddaughter, Kora J. Everling, who brought great joy in her final days.

She is also lovingly remembered by Bill’s children, Samantha J. Smith (Darrin) and Will A. Hess; grandchildren, Ashten Dalton-Spears (Austin), Kristen Dalton, Brayton Beaumont, and Reznor Hess; and great-grandson, Cayden Spears.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mark R. Loftus and is survived by her husband, Bill and sister-in-law, Edath Loftus.

Those who knew Judy will remember her for her fierce independence, gentle spirit, quick wit, and the way she made people feel cared for in both big and quiet ways. She had a way of making ordinary moments feel special, and her presence will be deeply missed, forever remembered in the laughter, stories, and love she leaves behind.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, April 9, from 4:00–7:00 PM at Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield. Family and friends are invited to come, share stories, and celebrate the many ways Judy touched their lives. The Celebration of Life will conclude with a prayer at 7:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Life’s Journey Avon or the American Cancer Society.
