Judith Morris Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 8, 2025.
Judy Morris, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on November 23, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan to Ward and Jeanette Smith, Judy lived a life marked by curiosity, compassion, and a deep commitment to family, learning, and service.

A lifelong learner and educator, Judy earned her doctorate in biology from Indiana University. Over the years she inspired countless students-first sharing her expertise as a professor at San Diego State University, then science and Spanish in southern Utah, and middle school science in southern California. She later moved to East Texas to be near her daughter Celia and her family. Judy was known for creative, engaging teaching methods that made learning memorable and fun.

An adventurous spirit, Judy's global travels included studying in Norway, working in Brazil (with her husband of 17 years, Bill Morris), leading student trips to Mexico, and visiting her son Pete in Australia. Her appreciation for diverse cultures - especially Hispanic culture - enriched her worldview and teaching.

Upon retirement, Judy dedicated herself to service. She volunteered at a women's shelter for victims of domestic abuse, served doing English-Spanish translation, and donated many hours to the East Texas Literacy Council teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants building new lives. She was a devoted advocate for those in need, always ready to help the underdog.

Above all, Judy's greatest joy was her family. Fiercely protective of her children and grandchildren, she was affectionately known as "Grandma Judy," not only by her family, but also their friends. She was ever-present at events, staying connected via FaceTime calls to Australia, and always listening to the stories of loved ones and offering encouragement.

Judy is survived by her daughter Celia Bower and husband Joe, and their sons Collin and Carson of White Oak; her son Peter Morris and wife Tara, and their daughters Sophia and Susannah of Brisbane, Australia; and her sister Kathleen Peters and husband Greg as well as their three children in Indiana. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Judy's adventurous heart, generous spirit and unwavering dedication to family, learning and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family is thankful for the exceptional care she received in recent years and months, particularly from the staff of Hawkins Creek Assisted Living, Bespoke Hospice, and Lisa Scrimpshur, APRN, MSN, FNP-C.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday, November 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at White Oak Community Church, 1501 North White Oak Road, White Oak, Texas. Casual dress and bright colors are welcome in celebration of Judy's love of comfortable and colorful things! In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the East Texas Literacy Council or Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center, organizations close to Judy's heart.
