Judith Jane Schomberg Carlson entered eternal rest on October 24, 2025, shortly after a diagnosis of liver cancer. Judy, daughter of Frederick Max “Ted” Schomberg and Geraldine (Meeker) Schomberg, was born February 4, 1938, at Muscatine Hospital. Judy would joke that her birth required her dad to bring electricity to their family farm near Letts, IA. She graduated from Letts High School in 1956 and Iowa State University, Ames, IA, with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1960. Followed by an M.S. in Child Development from ISU in 1967. In 1966, she married Carl Alfred Carlson in Letts, IA. The two made their home in Greenfield, IA. Judy and Carl were blessed by the birth of two children: Donovan Marion and Sara Ellen.
Immediately after graduating from ISU, Judy worked as a County Extension Home Economist for ISU Extension, followed by serving as a graduate assistant while she obtained her Master's. From 1966 to 1992, she was the Area Human Development Specialist for ISU Extension in SW Iowa. She proudly served on the Greenfield, IA School Board. Beginning in 1992, she was the County Extension Educator Director for ISU Extension up until her first retirement in 1994. Judy and Carl moved to their lake home near Battle Lake, MN shortly afterwards. From 1994 to 2000, Judy served as the National Executive Director of Epsilon Sigma Phi – “The Extension Professionals Organization.” Carl acted as her dutiful assistant. In 2001, she was a parent educator for the preschool program at Battle Lake Public Schools. Her leadership and expertise earned her several professional recognitions, such as Outstanding Extension Educator (Iowa), National Association of Extension Home Economics Distinguished Service (Iowa), and NAEHE Continued Excellence (Iowa).
Judy was a lifelong learner and greatly enjoyed learning how to be a good steward of her family's farmland. Judy belonged to the United Methodist Church, Greenfield, IA, Eagle Lake Lutheran, Battle Lake, MN, and Zion Lutheran, Muscatine, IA. She was a member of T.T.T. and P.E.O. She loved working with the Garden of Eatin’ group at Zion Lutheran, as well as serving as chair of the Social Ministry Committee, participating in Family Faith Night, helping serve meals for FFN, and her Bible study group. Her highlight each weekday at noon (as she told everyone) was the care of her daughter’s long-haired dachshund, Toby. She took great joy in her flowers, which she cultivated around her home, and her walks in the woods, especially with her granddaughters. With whom she also loved baking cakes and cookies of all kinds.
Survivors include her son, Donovan (Susan) Onalaska, WI, daughter, Sara Comstock (Scott), Muscatine, IA and granddaughters Laura Kate and Anna Grace Comstock. Her brother Steven (Janie) Schomberg, Iowa City, IA and sister Nancy (Glenn) Abney, Tucker, GA, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
