Julia Ann Detmer, 76, of Pleasant Valley, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, at Vassar Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 11, 1949, in Poughkeepsie, New York, she was the daughter of Raymond Nedwell and Anna (Tkaczow) Nedwell. Julia was a proud graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, Class of 1967.
After graduation, Julia began her career at IBM's South Road facility in Poughkeepsie, where she worked for 30 years as an executive secretary before retiring in 1997. She was a dedicated and respected employee who received the Cost Effective Award for her excellence and commitment to her work. Julia was also a proud member of the IBM Women's Volleyball Team, where she enjoyed competition and camaraderie with her coworkers.
In 1971, she married the love of her life, William Detmer, and together they built their own home on Creek Road in Pleasant Valley. Their 55-year marriage was filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
Julia's greatest joy came when she became a mother. When she gave birth to her daughter, Sabrina, she became the happiest person on earth. Julia's pride and love for her daughter never wavered, and she delighted in watching Sabrina grow into a talented, compassionate woman who went on to become a professional equestrian trainer and author in Florida.
Julia had a deep love for animals and a heart that touched everyone she met. She was kind, selfless, and always put others first. Her warmth, gentle spirit, and thoughtfulness made people feel seen, heard, and loved.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William Detmer; her cherished daughter, Sabrina Detmer-Schmidt; her sister, Helen Dawes; her brother, Peter Nedwell; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Dora Nedwell and brother Paul Nedwell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Stanislaus Church, Pleasant Valley, New York, on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
Julia will forever be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and the love she brought into the lives of all who knew her. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Julia A Detmer, please visit our floral store.
