Julia Wingard Raines, 100, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away April 6, 2024 at Carroll Campbell Place in Lexington, South Carolina. She was born on January 5, 1924, in Chapin, South Carolina, to the late Charles and Lula (Fulmer) Wingard.
Julia was a great mom to three wonderful children. She and her husband of 30 years, William P. Raines, Jr., traveled the world thanks to his career in the army. After his death in 1975, she did volunteer work until she went to work at USC. She very much enjoyed her time at USC & being a part of the Gamecocks and would routinely take in games at the stadium when she was able.
Julia is survived by William C. Raines of Cocoa Beach, Fl; Judy R. Addison (Butch) of Columbia, SC; Robert M. Raines (Alice) of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren - Dana Webb (Dana) of Cocoa Beach, Fl, M. R. Addison III (Leslie) of Aiken, SC, Amanda A. Nichols (Matthew) of Columbia, SC, Justin Raines of Cocoa Beach, Fl, Robert Raines, Jr. (Kim) of Charlottesville, VA, Cicely Laub (Brett) of Fredericksburg, VA, William Raines (Amanda) also of Fredericksburg, VA. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces, nephews to treasure her memory, as well as long-time friend, Mrs. Dorothy Rabon of Columbia, SC.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William P. Raines, Jr.; three sisters, Helen W. Hook, Ruth W. Hook, and Kathryn Liverman; her brothers, Carl A. Wingard, Ray F. Wingard and Robert W. Wingard; as well as sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Raines of Ocala, Fl.
The family will receive friends at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Funeral services will be in the chapel of the funeral home following the family visitation with Chaplain Tim Gould officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 2062 Beltline Blvd, Columbia, SC 29204. St. Johns Episcopal Church, 1151 Elm Savannah Road, Hopkins, SC 29061 or the charity of ones choice.
