SALEM- Julia "Julie" M. Rose (67), of Salem, passed away on Monday December 23, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Woburn, Julie was the daughter of the late Alyce (Kazlauskas) and William Henchey.
Growing up, Julie attended Woburn schools and was a graduate from Woburn High School in 1975. She went onto attend and graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1979 with a degree in Nutrition. Upon her graduation, she worked for Stouffer Foods before going back to school to get her MBA from Babson College and continued with her career. Although Julie worked a variety of jobs, she was most known for her career in government as the Financial Manager under John Sununu in the state of New Hampshire and then later went onto work for the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority at Deer Island before returning home to Salem working in the City Engineer's office up until 2019 when she retired.
Outside of her work, she was committed to serving others as she was the president of Historic Salem and served on a variety of boards that include Hamilton Hall, the Salem YMCA, the Salem Food Pantry, and Voices Against Injustice (previously known as the Salem Award Foundation). Her caring nature was throughout Salem as she would deliver homecooked food to individuals and families during the holiday season and organized the Book Swap at the Senior Center in Salem. She will be remembered for her caring nature to all those around her who felt her warmth through her acts of kindness and service.
Julie is survived by her husband James Matthew Rose of Salem, her sister Rosemary Henchey of Salem, her aunt Helene (Kazlauskas) Gustafson and her husband Gary of Hilton, NY, and her cousin Erik Gustafson of Niagara Falls, NY.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday January 3, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM at St. James Church, located at 160 Federal St. Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Clothing Connection P.O. Box 2076 Salem, MA 01970. We are devastated to lose our beloved sister-in-law and Aunt who was so caring and thoughtful. Our visits to Salem to spend time with Julie and Jim were always wonderful adventures, meticulously planned with delicious food and great people.
Julie was so lively, intelligent and motivated- we all loved her company so much and we miss her immensely.

Sending all of our love and support to Jim and Rosemary,
Michele, Colette and Gavin McKean

About 10 years ago, I took an Adult Ed. cooking class taught by Julie at NSCC. It was terrific class that rekindled my interest in gourmet level food preparation. Julie had a unique style of instruction, prompting all the students to cook together in harmony. So sorry to hear of her passing.

While I didn´t know Julia well, she was a neighbor hile
Ai libed in Salem and I often would walk by and she´d say hello if she was out in her yard or on her porch. I was always impressed with how active she was in Salem and thought of her as one of the many strong women who have made that city so great. Thanks for all you´ve done, the kindness you´ve shown, and sharing your adventures on facebook. You will be sorely missed. the kindness

Julie was not only the best boss I ever had, while I was Chair of Salem's No Place for Hate Committee and she lead Salem Award Foundation, we organized a symposium at Salem State, "Taking Action Against Intimidation" with SSU's Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and it exceeded all expectations. Julie was a good friend for so many and always stepped up. -Jeff Cohen
