After graduation from high school, he joined the United States Air Force at 17 years of age. His first assignment was Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He served his nation in the Air Force for 7 years before receiving an Honorable Discharge after achieving the rank of Master Sergeant.
While in the Air Force, he met and married Vivian Cooper in January of 1950. He later married Deanna Greenhaw Hefner in Pecos, Texas in 1992.

After being retired for 2 years and claiming that, “You would be amazed at how boring golfing and fishing can be when that’s all you do,” he went back into the work force by going to work in the oil and gas exploration business. He started out as a Permit Man, a job that many claimed was created especially for men like him and his brother, Wade. He was soon moved up to the position of Party Manager. His crews worked in many different states. After serving in this position for several years, he retired once again.
Soon, though, the drive to work again took hold. This time he signed on as part of a Security Detail in the Lucius Bunton Federal Courthouse in Pecos, Texas. He worked in this position for 10 years before retiring for the final time.
