Julie Whelan Considine, 91, of South Bend died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
Born Julie Bernadette Whelan on May 29, 1934, to James Francis and Helen (White) Whelan in Passaic, New Jersey. Her parents, her brother, Michael, and her husband, James preceded her in death.
Julie is survived by her children: Blaise (Donna) Considine of Columbia, MD, Meghan O'Meara (Denis) of Bethesda, MD, Cecily Considine (David) of Waleska, GA, Devin (Dawn) Considine of Mishawaka, grandchildren Aidan (Amanda) and Nora Considine, Brendan (Alexa), Kathleen, Margaret, Maryclare O'Meara, and Garrett Considine, along with five great-grandchildren, sister Mariellen Whelan and brother James Whelan, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews and her dearest friend, Mary Anne Retseck. Her family made her whole.
Julie graduated from the School of the Holy Child in Suffern, NY and Trinity College in Washington, DC where her love of music and sense of humor prompted her to create lyrics for old songs and poetry and to compose music and lyrics to "mark the occasion", celebrate an event, or simply entertain.
Julie and James married in 1957, settling down in South Bend, Jim's hometown and remained there for life. They shared 55 years of marriage before his passing in 2012.
Julie opened a piano studio in her home in 1958 and continued teaching throughout her life. In 1982 as the first music teacher hired, Julie established the music education program at St. Matthew Cathedral school in 1982 where she taught until her retirement in June of 2011, delighting in the children and their response to her love of music.
Julie sang in the St. Matthew Cathedral choir and the Cantus Cathedralis and served as a lector for many years.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday June 6, 2025 at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St. South Bend. Visitation will begin at 7:30 am until the start of mass. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
Donations in Julie's memory may be made to the Christ Child Society, 308 S. Scott St. (PO Box 1286) South Bend, IN 46624 or to the Bishop Crowley Education fund at St. Matthew.
