Julie (Smith) Tobin, age 90, of Wilmington, DE, died on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Millcroft Nursing Home, with her daughter Kathleen by her side.
The youngest of the late Stephen and Anna (Kaczmar) Smith's children, Julie was born on November 5, 1933, at their family farm near Elkton, Maryland. Her education began in Jackson Hall – a nearby one-room school house – and led to Conrad High School in Wilmington. Soon after graduating, Julie met her true love at a local dance, later marrying Jack in St. Georges on September 3, 1955. She continued as his loyal, loving partner for nearly 63 years, steadfastly seeing him through many health challenges – all while coping with her own. Newlywed years led Julie to several states, including New Jersey, where Kathleen was born. In 1963, the Tobins settled back in Delaware and became long-time residents of Newport.
Julie was an amazing wife, most loving mother, and dedicated homemaker. And, while nursing was never Julie's profession, it was her natural inclination. Her considerable caregiving skills were always in action, whether for her husband, family member, friend, or neighbor. When she saw a need, she met it generously and whole-heartedly.
When she allowed time for herself, Julie enjoyed traveling, whether it was a simple Sunday drive or a planned vacation. From Maine to Alaska, Canada, and Europe, she was thankful to experience many places, making beautiful memories with family and friends along the way. Above all, she cherished gatherings with extended family – where Julie's laughter, pies, and signature Jell-O salads were key ingredients. She delighted in shared times with her dearly-loved siblings, nieces, and nephews – all who helped make so many joyful occasions possible for her.
In addition to her parents, Julie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John H. "Jack" Tobin; and siblings, Michael Smith and Mary Nardo. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen M. Tobin (Michael Crowe) of Norfolk, VA; and siblings, Helen Harris of Wilmington and John Smith (Janice) of Newark.
All services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Julie's memory to St. Georges Historical Society, PO Box 267, St. Georges, DE 19733.
