Mr. Junior Dwight "Dee" Monroe, age 93, of
Charlestown, Indiana formerly of Madison entered this life on May 14, 1930 in
Madison, Indiana. He was the loving son of the late Raleigh and Juanita Rowlett Monroe. He was a 1949 graduate of Madison High School and was inducted in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. A 3-year stalwart for Madison High School, scored over 1,000 points for Hall of Fame Coach Ray Eddy All-State in 1949 also all-sectional, all-regional and all-semistate scored 36 points in state title game, though Madison lost to Jasper named Mr. Basketball scored 19 points in Indiana victory over Kentucky all-stars scored 42 points in a sectional victory over New Washington turned down a chance to play at Purdue, instead settling down in Madison. He was the oldest living Mr. Basketball. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 30, 1954 in
Louisville, Kentucky. He rose to the rate of Specialist Three serving in the light weapons infantry during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged on August 16, 1956 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois receiving the Good Conduct Medal. Dee was transferred to the Reserves and remained there until being discharged on August 29, 1962. Dee married Elizabeth Ackerman and was blessed with a daughter, Beverly and son Michael Steven. He worked several years at Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation, was a Madison Police Officer for three years, and retired in 1995 from the Jefferson Proving Ground. He was a lifelong resident of Madison until moving to be near his daughter. He was a member of North Madison Baptist Church, Madison VFW Post No. 1969, and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling and playing basketball in his younger years. He loved watching IU basketball and being with his family. A LOVING FAMILY
Junior will be missed by his two loving daughters, Beverly Barnes and her husband Bob of
Charlestown, Indiana and DeJean Marker-Brock and her husband Rusty of Sorrento, Florida; his grandchildren, M.D. and Mark Monroe, Kristie Lock-Williams, Kyle Lock, and Tiffany Marker-Norwood; his eleven great grandchildren; his one great great grandson; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Raleigh Monroe, his mother, Juanita Rowlett Monroe, his son, Michael Steven "Mike" Monroe, died June 7, 2012.
FUNERAL CEREMONY
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 3:00 p.m., by Pastor Frank McGee at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive
Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near
Madison, Indiana.

MILITARY HONORS
A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.
