Junko Ogawa Morrell, beloved wife, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born on November 21, 1942, in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan, to Hiroshi Ogawa and Ryoko Iida.
Though the second child in her family, Junko grew up as the eldest after the passing of her older sister, Kazuko. From a young age, she showed a remarkable sense of responsibility and compassion. As a high school student, she worked as a nurse's aide at Toho Medical School's Ophthalmology Department in Tokyo. After graduation, she pursued office work, learning both Japanese and English typing, and went on to build her early career in accounting offices.
While living in Tokyo, Junko met Alvin "Al" Morrell, a U.S. Navy Seabee from Santa Rosa, Florida, who was stationed in Atsugi. The two were married in 1968 in Tokyo, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, devotion, and adventure. Together, they lived in California, Hawaii, and the Midway Islands before eventually settling in Oak Harbor, Washington, where Al retired from military service.
Junko worked for 30 years at the Island County Treasurer's Office, where her kindness earned her the gratitude of the community she served. Oak Harbor became home for Junko and Al, and they cherished the many friendships they built there.
Junko will be remembered for her dedication to family, her love for her many pets over the decades, and the warmth she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
Junko is preceded in death by her lifelong partner, Al Morrell; her sisters, Kazuko and Hiroko; brother, Ichiro; niece, Stephanie; and brother-in-law, Robert. She is survived by her sisters, Kuniko and Reiko; her nephews and nieces: Brian, son of Hiroko; Osamu and Lisa, children of Kuniko and Nobuo; Diana, Nathan, Kit, Matthew, and Sarah, children of Reiko and Robert; and many grand nieces and nephews, whom she loved. We are grateful for the love you brought into our lives. You will be missed.
