Kara Westphal Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holland-Coble Funeral Home - Montezuma on Jan. 6, 2026.
Kara Westphal, 45 of Deep River passed away Monday, January 5, 2026. Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 am Friday, January 9, 2026 at the Deep River Community Center. A reception/luncheon will be held after the service at the Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to PALS "Poweshiek Animal League Services" or the Montezuma Food Pantry. Holland-Coble Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born on February 17, 1980, in Pella, Iowa, and lived a life marked by creativity, devotion to family, and a deep love for both people and animals.

Kara was a devoted wife to her husband, Tony Westphal, and a loving mother to her three sons, Nicholas, Hunter, and Kolton, as well as her three stepchildren, Chase, Emory, and Angelic. Her family was the center of her world, and many of her happiest moments were spent cooking with them, camping together, and creating memories filled with laughter and warmth.

She is survived by her parents, Marvin and Bonnie Van Dam, and her siblings, Nickolas (Becca) Van Dam, Amber (Stephan) Kerby, and Alissa Van Dam. Kara also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will carry her memory forward.

Kara had a creative and adventurous spirit. She loved crafting, cooking, and experimenting with homemade moonshine. She found joy in travel, especially to the Ozarks, and in camping as much as possible. She was an animal lover with a tender heart and a lifelong affection for The Nightmare Before Christmas, a reflection of her unique and playful personality.

In recent years, Kara was on a meaningful professional journey in mental health services. She held a dream of helping others through her own experiences, guided by compassion and an understanding of struggle. Her desire to support and uplift those around her was a quiet but powerful part of who she was.

Kara will be remembered for her warmth, her love for her family, her creativity, and her gentle heart. She leaves behind a space that cannot be filled, and a legacy of love that will endure in the lives she touched.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
