Carl was born on January 22, 1946, in
Iowa City, Iowa, to Vernon "Whitey" Carl Arthur Goehring and Dorothy Luella Aldean (McMahon) Goehring. He was the fourth of six children in a family that included Edamae (Edward) Metz, Larry (Marjorie) Goehring, Janice (Jerry) Barnard, Carl, Ron (Donna) Goehring, and Nancy (Luis) Bermudez. Carl graduated from Grinnell Senior High School with the Class of 1964, where he excelled in multiple sports. A gifted athlete, Carl left a lasting mark on Grinnell High School athletics. He still holds the school record in the football throw, a record he set during the final year the event was included in track and field-ensuring it will stand forever. For those wondering, the throw measured approximately 72 yards, a testament to Carl's remarkable strength and talent.
Following high school, Carl briefly explored college before deciding to enter the workforce. He worked at several Grinnell-area factories, including Donaldson's and Miracle Recreation Equipment, before completing his career after 12 years in maintenance at Grinnell College, where he eventually retired. Carl's love of sports extended far beyond his high school days. He especially cherished men's fast-pitch softball, fondly recalling his years with Sully Plumbing & Heating and later the Monte Merchants/Monte Manufacturing teams. When knee issues ended his playing career, Carl remained deeply involved in the game-umpiring high school baseball and softball and continuing with Monte Manufacturing as the team's coach and manager. He also gave his time coaching Jamey's Little League baseball teams for several years. After fast-pitch softball declined and the Monte team disbanded, Carl became a familiar and beloved fixture at East Side Park in Montezuma, where he ran the concession stand for everything from youth T-ball to adult slow-pitch leagues. True to his generous spirit, Carl donated all profits from each summer to the city to support improvements to the ball field. Carl's love for athletics never faded. He faithfully followed Rob and Jamey through all their athletic pursuits, and to the best of anyone's knowledge, he never missed a game-no matter the sport or the distance. When grandchildren entered the picture and their calendars filled with activities, Carl was once again there-watching, cheering, and quietly beaming with pride.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Vernon Goehring; his brother Larry Goehring; brothers-in-law Ed Metz and Jerry Barnard; and a grandson Drew Gibson.
Left to cherish his memory are his step-sons - whom he raised as his own and they are forever grateful for all he selflessly did for them and their families. Rob, Dee, Brett and Drew Gibson, and Jamey, Nyahok, Jayden, Colin and Ayva Gibson, and many extended family members, niece and nephews, friends, teammates, and members of the communities he so faithfully served. Carl will be remembered for his unwavering love of sports, his generosity, his dedication to family, and the countless lives he touched from the sidelines and beyond.
Memorial contributions may be made in Carl's name to the Grinnell Tigers Baseball team.
