Newcomer Funeral Home - West Metro ChapelIt is with a heartfelt sense of loss that we announce the passing of Kevin Johnson, who left this world peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Lakewood, Colorado, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 6, 1955, in Grinnell, Iowa, Kevin’s life was a remarkable journey marked by dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to family. A proud graduate of Lakewood High School, in 1975 he not only graduated but also married his high school sweetheart, Cindy, just a month later. They welcomed their son, Kevin, in 1978 and daughter, Jennifer, in 1980. Their fifty years together stand as a beautiful testament to enduring love and partnership.
Kevin devoted much of his life to the Jefferson County Schools system, where he made history as the youngest person ever promoted to Building Engineer at the time. His work ethic was unparalleled, guided by a practical common sense and an inspiring dedication to the well-being of the kids he served. He was more than just a custodian—he was a mentor and a positive influence, always encouraging young minds to strive toward becoming their best selves.
Kevin was a man deeply connected to the simple joys of life. He was an avid lover of the mountains, often taking fishing and camping trips that became magical experiences for his family. He started the family tradition of going on hikes to Diamond Lake during biennial family reunions and by doing so, created cherished memories. His grandchildren fondly remember their Grandpa, Bambpa, and Papa, who could make even a simple walk in the park seem like an adventure.
Kevin’s character was marked by honesty, a clear sense of right and wrong, and a wonderful sense of humor that brought lightness to even the hardest of times. He often said “we're just going to keep on keepin' on, like we always do,” exemplifying his calm demeanor and steady resolve.
He found delight in his pigeons—breeding and racing them with passion—and cheering fervently for the Denver Broncos.
Kevin leaves behind a legacy enriched by the love of his devoted wife, Cindy Johnson; his children, Kevin Johnson II and his wife Amber, and Jennifer Johnson and her wife Sarah; his grandchildren Kayla, Cameron, Aden, and Porter; and his great-grandson Jaxon as well as siblings, Terry Johnson (Audrey), Michael Johnson (Roxanne), and Patty Ireland (Rod).
Kevin was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Anna and Jack Sturdefant; his father, Gene Johnson; his brother Mark Johnson; and his nephew Matthew Johnson.
Throughout his life, Kevin took immense pride in his family, his pigeons, his career, and the example he set in love and commitment. As we remember him, we hold close the image of a man who defined what it means to be a loving family man, a kind soul who truly lived life by his values. He will be deeply missed, yet his spirit and the lessons he imparted will live on.
