Graveside service for Karan Nan Dougherty, 78, of Harvest, Alabama will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Dougherty passed away peacefully at her home on October 14, 2025.
Karan Nan Dougherty was born on November 15, 1946, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Boyd Grover and Etta Pauline (Carbery) Reid. Her family later moved to Odessa, Texas, where she grew up and attended school.
In 1969, Karan met the love of her life, Richard Bryan Dougherty II, at Fort Bliss. The two were married on June 5, 1970, and were blessed with two children. Karan worked as an administrative executive assistant for the government while Richard proudly served in the United States Army. During their military years, they spent over two decades living in Germany and traveling to many countries together as a family. In 1999, they settled in Harvest, Alabama, where Karan continued her career until her retirement in 2015.
In her younger years, Karan had a passion for fast cars and loved the thrill of watching them race. She and Richard were inseparable, sharing countless hobbies and adventures over the years-including antique shopping, square dancing, archery, bowling, and golfing.
When her grandchildren were born, Karan discovered a new passion-making beautiful wreaths. What began as a loving craft soon became a cherished hobby that she enjoyed for 17 years.
Karan is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Richard Dougherty II; her daughter, Nanetta Kay Edelman and husband, Kerwin Jacob Edelman, of Athens, Alabama; her son, Richard Bernard Dougherty and wife, Maria G. Dougherty, of Houston, Texas; her brother, Paul Reid and wife Vickie, of Conroe, Texas; and her grandchildren, Tristan Cody Dougherty, Shawn Michael Dougherty, Kaelyn Marie Dougherty, and Shalyn Kay Dougherty. She will also be deeply missed by many other loving family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Karan will be remembered for her joyful spirit, creativity, and the deep love she shared with her family. Her warmth and kindness touched everyone who knew her, and her memory will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those she loved most.
