To anyone who knew her, as her nieces, we didn't know anyone who she knew online, but know that she posted (but we didn't know her handle). Please feel free to send your information to us privately as we would love to find her online presence. Please email us at [email protected]. Thank you.

I am one of the "online friends" that Peaches mentions. I knew Karen only from her online handle, D4x; I never knew her real name. Nonetheless, for me and many others her online contributions were astonishing with her command of the histories, cultures, and politics of many far-flung nations. I wondered if her handle were an alias for a scholar whose name we should know. She usually embellished her contributions with what she called 'mnemonics', photos of birds. Her favorite was the Chickadee, which she called the "Truth Teller," after an Indian legend that ennobled that little bird. In our little online community, and doubtless others in which she participated, she was admired and respected by people who knew little about her personally, other than the strength she revealed as she kept contributing in the face of great difficulties. We will miss her greatly.

I am deeply saddened to learn that our dear, sweet, fierce, brilliant friend has lost this battle. She fought it with everything she had. I only knew her virtually, from a favorite blog site and we had recently corresponded via email until she was no longer able. I can't believe she was at Watkins Glen in 1973, because I was there, too. Would have been fun to chat about. Heartfelt condolences to Karen's family - please know that she was widely loved, admired and respected by her online friends.
