Karen Irene (Homeburg) Leis was born in Fort Morgan, CO on January 5th, 1944, to John and Mary Homeburg. Karen passed away on November 25, 2024. Karen enjoyed playing and doing things with her siblings. She often talked about the cleaning jobs she would help her dad with. She was always a worker and started at a young age. Karen enjoyed traveling some after retiring. She always had a fun time and created so many family memories.
Karen met the love of her life Herbert Dwayne Leis in 1978 at Sunset Manor. She was working at Sunset Manor and Herb came in to cut hair at Sunset Manor as the barber. They just seemed to connect and hit it off. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married at the Eben Ezer Wedding Chapel on August 26th, 1979. Karen and Herb have four daughters together Tammy Lester, Jean Hopkin, Deborah Dilka, and Heather Kemp.
Karen loved going to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events, school activities, anything she could watch them participate in. Karen enjoyed many jobs through out her life, but her job she was the most passionate about was working as the kitchen manager at the Brush High School for the Brush Public School District RE-2(J). Karen worked at the Brush Public School District for 21 years. Karen enjoyed seeing the students every day and making sure each one was never hungry. She was also known by the students as the cookie lady.
Everyone who knew Karen knew her passion for ceramics and crafting. She worked hard every year painting ceramics for craft fairs in November and December. Nobody knows how many Christmas deer she painted and hand decorated. Karen will always be remembered for her caring and kind heart. We couldn't have asked for a better wife/mom/ grandma, and will miss Karen every day.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, sister Lea Ann Homeburg, and her brother John Robert Homeburg. She is survived by her husband Herbert, sister Peggy Baker, daughters Tammy (Bill) Lester, Jean (Randy) Hopkin, Deborah (Steve) Dilka, Heather (Kenneth) Kemp, grandchildren Dean and Doug Gordon, Luke, Troy and Adam Hopkin, Stephanie, Bobby and Kevin Dilka, Chrissy Urbanina, and Kenli and Kasen Kemp, 29 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 6th, at 10:00 am at the Brush Cemetery in Brush, CO.
